"It is the summer of 1991 and WW III is in full fury. Early action in the North Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian Sea has been far more brutal and damaging than either the Soviets or NATO had ever envisioned. Yesterday, the two antagonists hit head-on. The Battle of Vestfjord ended with both sides battered, exhausted, and without a clear victor.
While the Soviet Northern Fleet focuses on pursuing the damaged American carrier battle group, Kiev, crippled during her first engagement, is limping home with minimal escort.
The Kiev-class has become one of the most useful units of the Soviet Navy. The combination of long-range heavy SSMs, 20 ASW helicopters, and its own defenses, combined with those of its escorts, have made it a difficult target. But now she is crippled."
This scenario was inspired by the situation described in the "High Tide" compilation from Clash of Arms.
