I have heard a rumor over at UBI that several(maby at least 1/3 to 1/2) of th GWX dev team has moved over to SHIV and have started to work on a supper mod for the pac. So I decided to come over here to see if the rumor was anything more then just that. Thanks in advance.

If you heard a rumor then you're looking at the wrong forum. GWX4 was announced here months ago, and there are many ongoing discussions about it. Mostly speculation, of course, since as usual the GWX team aren't talking, just working hard.

Actually I think (there's that speculation again) that the real work won't start until after the upcoming release of GWX3.

Congratulations on a release you have all worked hard on for a long time. Sorry you couldn't share in the humor of a "supper mod" without somehow thinking is demeaned the Kapt or the Grey Wolves themselves. It did not, and those who piggy-backed on my original comment were merely having fun with a truly humorous unintentional comment by the OP, not a member, or in any connected with the "offended".

Lighten up guys. We know you've been working hard but life does exist apart from you and your work. Buy some perspective and enjoy life.

On the other hand, for those who haven't played SH3 lately, this would be an appropriate time to jump back in and check out the new release of GWX. You'll find that rumors of SH3's demise are greatly exaggerated. It remains a good game.

MODERATOR WARNING: The Spam topic was settled two weeks ago. Stop trying to resurrect it. If you want to tell people what to do, send them a PM.

Something like the video Dowly post the link to :D
The eject sequence in sh4 relies on the torpedo tube being submerged, so as soon as it leaves the tube it drops to it's intended run depth, through the hull... I'm still working on a workaround for that.
@Mikhayl, yes, it is derivated from the VIIC I built, but as Dowly said it's a wip, I still need to rework the deck and the conning tower.

Hey, give him credit for the solo rudder as well as the VIIA stern tube.

More importantly, the whole thing looks fantastic in SH4. But why the VIIA at all?

bigboywooly
01-27-09, 05:21 PM
Hey, give him credit for the solo rudder as well as the VIIA stern tube.

More importantly, the whole thing looks fantastic in SH4. But why the VIIA at all?

U-32 type VIIA sank the largest ship ever sunk by a German U Boot ( without counting the mine loss of the HMHS Britannic in 1916 (Empress of Britain 43000 tons)
U-29 type VIIA sank the carrier HMS Courageous
U-30 typ VIIA sank the first ship of the war (SS Athenia 14000 tons)

In fact, between them, the VIIA boats combined...

Sank 107 merchant ships, totalling 462,818 GRT
Damaged 2 merchants beyond repair for 13,247 GRT
Captured 3 merchants worth 6,574 tonnes
Sank 4 warships, totalling 24,865 tonnes
Sank 4 Auxiliary warships, for 4,928 GRT
Damaged 8 merchants for 53,997 tonnes
Damaged 3 warships for 73,050 tonnes
Of the warships damaged, victims included HMS Nelson (mined by U-31), HMS Barham (torpedoed by U-30) and HMS Fiji (torpedoed by U-32).

More significant is the sinking of HMS Courageous (a fleet carrier) by U-29. Following this incident, the Royal Navy withdrew its fleet carriers from anti-submarine patrol... a strategic mistake that was not reversed until some time later. This action alone makes the VIIA a significant player in the Battle of the Atlantic in assisting the ascent of the U-Waffe.

From thise thread

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=124253

And remember

It is certainly true that there were only a few made. From what I could find, there were 10 built in total... all of which were put into combat service. Still, 10 boats in combat service is certainly more significant that some other types.

Only 6 Type-IIA (U-1 to U-6, incl.)
Only 8 Type-IIC (U-56 to U-63, incl.)
Only 8 Type-IX (as in IXA, not type IX boats in general, U-37 to U-44, incl.)
Only 2 Type-IXD1 (U-180 and U-195)
Only 6 Type-VIID (U-213 to U-218. incl.)
Only 4 Type-VIIF (U-1059 to U-1062, incl.)
Only 7 U-Flak (U-441, U-256, U-621, U-953, U-211, U-263 and U-271)
Only 8 XB (U-116, U-117, U-118, U-119, U-219, U-220, U-233, and U-234)
Furthermore, although there were a lot more commissioned, there were only 6 Type-XXIII boats that actually sailed on combat patrols.

Now the types above that I have written in Bold Green are implemented in SH3 or in already existing mods. So, given that the VIIA was used in greater numbers than all of these, why not consider it for implementing

GWX is about the U-boat war mate.

Whatever waters the U-boat splashed around in... that is what we mod.

There are already mods that cover U.S Navy submarine warfare in the Pacific.

"The Grey Wolves" is the nickname that Admiral Doenitz gave his U-boatmen... and that is reflected in the title we gave our work.

A public information release is coming soon... but the exact timing is subject to the demands of real life.:arrgh!:

Sure, but after seeing what ya'll guys did with SH3, I experienced a brief 'oh hell yes' moment when I saw this associated with SH4, right before I noted that it was centered on the Germans rather than the fleet boats.

I played SH3 until I heard German in my sleep, but the warmest place in my heart is reserved for the fleet boats, hence my excitement...then dismay.:DL

Could've been used for brand recognition, so I think I can be forgiven for dreaming.

The biggest thing that keeps me playing SH3 is that I like World War II submarines. Period. I've longed since SH1 to be able to play in the Pacific again, but thanks to Aces Of The Deep and SH3 I've come to love the German boats as well. Until there is a GWX4 I will have to keep playing SH3, no matter how much better I think SH4 is.

My view exactly Steve :yep:

Although I have SH4 and the Pacific Mods I am still playing the Atlantic Theater. Don't get me wrong SH4 with the extra mods is absolutely brilliant, but somehow when I think of submarines my mind and thoughts go to the Atlantic. I think Clay Blair was correct when he called the Pacific Operations against Japan the "Silent Victory".

Hi!

I should think Melnibonian's interpretation is as good as any, given that Blair's Silent Victory was the first large scale retelling of the submarine war that was then relatively unknown, and therefore "silent", to the public at large. As the Amazon says, "When published in 1975, it was the first such account to detail controversial aspects of the American campaign, from the torpedo scandal to discrepancies between claimed and confirmed sinkings."

Sledgehammer,

but it was all about U-boats. With SH4 you have fleetboats also,
I hope you can install GWX4 with jsgme as any other mod.
:woot:
Captain Vlad = "I played SH3 until I heard German in my sleep, but the warmest place in my heart is reserved for the fleet boats, hence my excitement...then dismay.:DL"

Fleetboats will allways be an important part of SH4.:DL
Now you can have both english and german speech at same time in SH4,
Like with my sh3ToSh4 ENV RFB-om700 one voice file "9" is for german lanquage and rest for english, So I do not think that GWX can take such a dominant role in SH4 as it did in SH3.:DL
True I am sure that GWX4 will be a great mod and I will play it a lot,:DL
but there are allready other great mods for fleetboats and U-boats.

You guys need to do Normal mapping and bump mapping on that to cut down on the load times with models like that.

The polygon count on that is probably astronomical. And seeing as how a lot of people here don't have that great of a system (some of you do, not talking about you guys) It would probably be a wise idea to have a stunted version of those highpoly models for the low end systems.

Like using LODs (Level of Detail) or something to that effect.

Have a Light version for the SH3 style rigs (None of the grid work on the hull, it's all in the textures) so you don't leave those guys with crappy framerates.

Just my two cents. Looks great anyways:yeah:

I should think Melnibonian's interpretation is as good as any, given that Blair's Silent Victory was the first large scale retelling of the submarine war that was then relatively unknown, and therefore "silent", to the public at large. As the Amazon says, "When published in 1975, it was the first such account to detail controversial aspects of the American campaign, from the torpedo scandal to discrepancies between claimed and confirmed sinkings."

That is absolutely correct. As a young child I was almost unaware of the extent the US submarines devastated the Japanese Navy. All the attention was focused on the Atlantic Theater. That can be one of the reasons why even now I am more attached towards German submarines and not the US ones.

That is also correct. Just to make one thing clear though. It has nothing to do with domination of the game. In SH3 (so far at least) the only option you have is to play the German submarines, so one might talk about "Atlantic Domination" and not GWX as there are other good mods out there. With respect to SH4 I am very happy to see good mods for the Pacific Ocean. Nevertheless GWX is just going to use the game engine and there is not any indication or effort to "dominate" the scene as the comparison between the two theaters is impossible. In my opinion with GWX4 we can have the ultimate WWII submariner's dream. One game engine and two different theaters of operations. Each player can play the one he or she likes (I would say the "loud" and "silent" ones but people might missunderstand me so please see this as a joke :yep:)

melnibonian = "Just to make one thing clear though. It has nothing to do with domination of the game"
What I ment was about Technical Side of game, like, "jsgme installing option"
also sound, will there be german Speech etc in GWX4, if so it can be made so that German speech will not use all Speech files, like my latest
Sh3 to Sh4 Env mod it uses only one Speech file for german voices, so that when you playgerman side you hear german Speech and when US side English.
To say it shortly : I hope that you can play US side also while GWX4 is installed.:woot:

My humble advice: get a copy of Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous WWII Submarine. I think if you read that (assuming you haven't already :) ) you will find the Pacific theater very exciting.

As for GWX and US subs, those guys are talented and diligent, but even they cannot do all things for all people. They have chosen to concentrate their energies on U-boats, and their work speaks for itself. :salute: I respect their choices.

There are other modders and mod teams who address the Pacific side of SH4, with impressive results.

Looking back to a couple of responses right after my last post, I think some folks have misunderstood my intent. I wasn't being critical of the GWX guys, I was merely expressing my personal dissapointment that that particular team wasn't working on a mod centered on the Pacific Theater.

That's all.:DL If anything, I feel the team should be complimented that people salivate at the very idea of a 'Pacific GWX'.

I can assure you that is not correct. I am sure everyone understood your intention and your well meant comments. It's a shame that GWX concentrate on the Atlantic theater only but on the other hand I feel that people should feel free to work on areas they like and enjoy. The opinions about the different theaters are just that, opinions. Nothing more. Both areas have their merits and thankfully there are some good mods out there to keep the Pacific Players happy. As I said to a previous post the good thing with SH4 and GWX is that in the future there will be a single game engine (SH4) and everyone can chose their mod of choice and their theater of choice. For me that's progress :yep::up:

The most demanding part of GWX on the PCs is the increased size of the campaign files, not the graphics, In fact the bulk of the complains on GWX are about the load times, and that's entirely dependant on the size of the campaign, hopefully with the ability of sh4 to split the campaign we can make things better in that area.
About JSGME, the extend and size of the changed files in GWX prevents us from using it, as it should take forever to enable or disable it, it's simpler to have a dual SHx install.
And not all of us have state of the art PCs, I do all my moding in a p4 with 2 gigs of ram, and a medium range GForce , the only really fats thing I've is a stripped disk RAID.

Even though they were on the enemy’s side, for some reason I prefer the U-boats. I guess it’s because I find the Atlantic more interesting than the Pacific. To each his own, and I’m thrilled that GWX is coming to SH4.

One thing I keep in mind.
If GWX 4 was to be enabled by JSGME.
The SH4 folder would not be corrected.
You would be hammered right off the bat.

That's not a fault of JSGME, nor any fault of GWX work.
That's just how it would be period.

Multiple installs are not beyond anyones grasp.
So, it is, for the most part?
Not an issue.

To make it an issue is nonsense.

Hello:DL
I understand now that GWX4 needs to be permanently installed
for SH4 like it was with SH3.
I have two compatibility questions I would like to ask with all the respect for GWX team:hmmm:
Can you play Fleetboats after installing GWX4 .Will GWX4 work with stock SH41.5 Fleetboats,
or can "fleetboat supermods" TMO, or RFB, or FOTRS, enabled with
jsgme on top of GWX4, like OM700 mod, maybe something like this:
SH41.5
GWX4 permanently installed.:yeah:
"Fleetboat Subermod".:DL
(files that make "Fleetboat Subermod" installing possible) if nessesary

Now maybe GWX4 do not work only "fleetboat supermod" works,ok :DL
You like to play GWX4 again, disable "fleetboat supermod", and now
GWX4 works again:DL

What do you think? is it at all possible:hmmm:

Then If any of this is not possible then how can you make multiple installs of SH4,
While working with my SH3 in SH4 mod, I tried to make a second
installation of SH4 , I renamed My SH41.5 installation, and tried to install
a new SH4 but install shield refused to do it, it said that I allready have
a SH4 installed, It worked with SH3 but not for SH4:timeout:.
One last thing, I have SH4 and SH4 1.5 DVDs but what about them that have
downloaded SH1.5 version, can they make multiple installations:06:

"As for GWX and US subs, those guys are talented and diligent, but even they cannot do all things for all people. They have chosen to concentrate their energies on U-boats, and their work speaks for itself. :salute: I respect their choices."
I respect Also GWX teams choices:up::up::up::yep:
And as modder I know that you maybe have only one way to do something
to make it work. All the best for GWX team:up::up::up:
P.S: I have found answer to my second question = Multi SH4, works ok with vista.:woot:

Privateer is correct. A lot of multiple installs of SH3 and SH4. One theater or the other with this mod pack or that mod pack. Sometimes just stock. It is a non-issue. :03:
