View Full Version : Collision between Carrier and Destroyer?

I assume it is possible in SH4? I was in the Battle of Midway and fired off a torpedo @ a carrier. I didn't follow the torpedo all the way to it's target in order to maneuver away from other IJN vessels and the message said "Torpedo Impact." I look over and the destroyer is listing badly, but dangerously close to the carrier. I have no idea whether the destroyer and carrier collided or whether I scored a hit on the carrier. Anyways, I know I sank a destroyer and might have finished off a Kongo Battleship, but still confused about whether enemy ships can collide in the course of battle.

They can, but it's rare. Seems more likely in poor visibility;

its very common in the single missions when dealing with large task forces but i havent seen it in campaigns but i would imagine it could happen if the ships were close enough together. with merchant convoys you dont see it because they dont have enough speed to run anything over, it just moves out of the way before they hit.

the fast warships scramble (often in different directions) when alerted and often you see a destroyer get pushed around and occassionally sink from it. the midway mission is one that you can get it to happen in quite often but not every time. the key is if you knock off most of the capital ships so the main body of the task force is destroyed, say two of the carriers and a battleship, then the destroyers and cruisers will circle you like flies on a turd and two or three destroyers will almost certainly get run into and pushed around but in order to sink they need to get pushed under and flood so unless its a carrier or battleship doing it they usually pop up after getting pushed around untill it slides out of the way.

ship to ship collisions in the game dont damage either ship as far as i can tell but the ship that is being pushed will take on water to some degree so after seperating they sit low in the bow untill they pump the water out, then they are good as new.

I have never seen any collisions but I did see a destroyer blow his own stern off once with depth charges.

Which would suit me fine if that happened more often...:yep:

Many strange things happen in the sim..so I wouldn't rule out collisions just because I had not witnessed one personally.

I have seen instances where they have started to shoot on each other :D

i have had the pleasure of watching an escorting destroyer run down and plow over a lifeboat full of survivors at high speed, crushing the lifeboat and the survivors, the amazing thing was, it did not have to happen, the destroyer just went ape sh*t and started mowing over the lifeboats

LOL... yea this is nothing new. These types of incidents have been around since SH3.

Remeber in SH3 when the PT boats would shoot themselves and set themselves on fire because their firing arc was lower than themselves :rotfl:

Ive seen ships run into one another, Ive seen ships run aground, Ive seen planes fly into the side of a mountain.

Yea Ive seen all kinds of things. I saw just last night a gun crew still at their station on a sinking merchant. She was rolled 90 degrees, bow resting on the bottom. Dedicated, gravity defying gun crew :|\\

Well, I got that carrier today, that much I know for certain. I wait for the allied air raids to arrive and start shooting while the escorts are dodging bombs and maneuvering all around. Scored 1 direct hit on the carrier and it must've hit something important because 90 seconds later it was gone. I'm still having to waste torpedoes on destroyers though, which frustrates me a little.

I still don't see why enemy ships shouldn't be able to collide, after all was it not a torpedo that caused the mayhem between Mogami and another ship in real life that resulted in a collision that sunk one of them and caused the other to be out of action for a very long time?

I also noticed a surviving American pilot standing on water.

The other day at the docks, I watched a soldier take a long walk, off a short pier, over thin air, almost out to the deck of my boat, look around, then walk the thin air back to the dock. :p

If you ever get the chance to watch a carrier sink, especially one that rolls over, the planes that aren't blown off the flight deck stay super glued to it no matter how much the ship lists.

Much to the chagrin of the old navy salts,we Zoomies have always been quite adept at "walking on water."

They still puzzle over why we don't bother to tuck our pant legs into our boots during ship's drills...;)

In a career using external view I watched a destroyer ram a merchie. Nothing happened--they just bumper carred their way past each other and kept on.

Remember when the destoyers would run over your sub striking your conning tower and the Destroyer would burst into flames and sink ?! :rotfl:

I had a similar experience when skulking about in Osaka Bay doing a photo recon job, instead of a destroyer it was one of those pesky gunboats, just as well really as the gunboat had no depth charges. The gunboat hit the top of my sail and exploded, it then promptly sank, didn't get the credit but I was too glad for it's destruction as it let me get on with my tasking :arrgh!:

Today, I had two destroyers on my aft. I sank one with aft torpedoes, but subsequent shots at the other proved ineffective. A Japanese light cruiser was closing to assist the destroyer except the cruiser's navigator must have had s**t for brains because the bow of the cruiser goes beautifully into the destroyer, adios IJN destroyer and for good measure a torpedo I had fired @ the destroyer arrives just as the cruiser gets in it's line of fire, adios IJN light cruiser.

LOL some folks have all the luck ! :rotfl:

If I had seen that scene I would have been digging for depth wide eyed and puckered ...

Im sure collisions do damage as destroyers ramming my yamato set fire and eventually sink.
