Here is my first attempt at a mod for SH4. This mod gets rid of the bottom left navtools and puts them up in the top right corner ala SH3. This is really a sorta beta release, so any feedback/help/fixes would be greatly appreciated. It also places the course plotting tool back where it should be!

RetroNavTools Beta release

To install with JGSME -- Unzip in the SH4\MODS folder and use JGSME to install the mod

To manually install --
1) BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL menu_1024_768.ini file!
2) Choose which version you want to install (static/dropdown) and copy the associated menu_1024_768.ini file into your SH4\Data\Menu folder.
3) Start up SH4 and enjoy!

I didn't quite like the navtools that are included in the stock SH4 install. They are just too big and takes away from valuable navmap real estate. In addition the developers decided to move the plotting tool down to the bottom menu. I have created this mod to get back to the old SH3 style navmap tools, and this release also restores the plotting tool to the navmap page.

I have included two versions, a dropdown menu like in SH3, and a static version of the menu. I will explain why there is two versions later.

Features:
1) All the functionality of the old style SH3 dropdown menu.
2) No longer is there a seperate button for "erase all", to access the "erase all" function just control-click on the erase button in the menu (I never liked the seperate button since I often mistakenly clicked the "erase all" button.
3) edge scroll on the navmap has been disabled (why? read below)

Known Problems/Bugs:
1) When the dropdown version is in it's hidden position, the supposedly hidden buttons are still functional. Clicking on the "empty" area in the top right corner may lead to unexpected tool implementation. I included a static version to avoid this accidental clicking of tools
2) Some of the toolbar menu items dissapear when clicked. This appears to be a design feature in SH4. I have yet figured a way to keep all of the menu items after clicked, if anyone knows how to fix this let me know!
3) Edge scrolling has been disabled (I never liked it to begin with). This was done because a) with the mod enabled, the screen would scroll up when I tried to access the menu b) trying to make the menu area a "dead scroll" area broke the scrolling at the bottom of the page. Just to make life simpler I just disabled it entirely.
4) Not all of the "button" area is available for activation when a tool is clicked. This is most apparent when trying to use the "mark" tool. It seems that the sim wants to use the visible portion of the tool button as an activation key. Since the "mark" tool is thin, this leads to some trouble in finding the right spot to click.

OK, tried to tweak some more to get rid of the problems noted in the original post, but I either cant figure out how to fix them, or the ability to fix them are due to limitations presented in the new game engine. I suspect it is the latter, and is why there was not an option to have navtools in this format in the final game release.

If anyone else want's go fool around with it to improve upon it, by all means, go ahead. If someone needs help trying to figure out the new format of the elements in the file, drop me a message and I can help ya out.

Hi zAmboni,

OneTinSoldier passed your name to me, and might I say your retro tools mod is very well apreciated by me. I did have two requests for you if you have the time. The tools in the SH3 attack map were very usefull, the bearing indicator which appear when you press the '?'. My second question regards the scroll speed of your mods. I tried to increase the speed knowing what I know from SH3, but I cannot seem to make the drop down move faster. Is there any way you can increase the scroll speed or let us know how to increase the speed?

:cool: Nice work, I actually found a NAV MAP under all that original clutter!

I combined this with the smaller Chronograph. (the original wa the size of TEXAS!)

Valuable realistate was taken up by the original tool pictures.

I tried to place this mod on top of Real Fleet Boat, and I get a "Menu ID Not found" error(menu 42170006) before I get to the main menu.

I suppose I just need to copy & paste from the Menu 1024x768 Config text editor ? Are the default SH4 NavMap tools the same lines as the RetroTools mod ? And if so, where are they in the file ?

Sorry to be a pain, but I love the SH3 Nav Tools better, less clutter on the screen.

Wow - this looks great - I'd like to try this, but as everything seems to mess with this same .ini file I can't just use the JSGME version and replace my existing tweaked .ini file with this new one.

Is there any way you could post (or include in an updated readme in the mod) a copy of the changed sections of the .ini file so we could manually make these changes to our own .ini file and use these great new tools without losing our other changes?

Ok I donwloaded the Mod and installed it, Nuthen !

I got an error saying cannot find Menu, so I replaced the the old menu to get the game to get it work again

But I have version 1.2 installed , are you saying I have to uninstall and reinstall the game, and then put the menue file in and then patch it ?
All I see is Chinese charicters when I look at all that goop.
Pictures would be nice too cause all Im use to is dragging and dropping files, I know how to save the old ones as well.

No need to uninstall SH4 v1.2 as long as it runs fine.

Actually, zAmboni only released one file to update to v1.2 and not the graphic ones.

This is for a stock SH4 v1.2 with no other mod (modifying the menu_1024_768_.ini file) installed:

1 - Dl the RetroNavMapTools v1.2 update:

Unpack, chose the version you like (dropdown or static), open folders and locate the menu_1024_768_.ini file. That's the new file to insert in the mod.

2- Dld the mod RetroNavMapTools (Jiims NavMapTools v1.3) here:
http://home.comcast.net/%7Elinuxrh/RetroNavMapTools_Jiims-NavMapTools-v1.3_Aces-Colored-Menu-Bar.7z

Unpack, open the Data\Menu folder. Replace the menu_1024_768_.ini by the one you chose on step1.


Your mod is ready; move it to the MODS folder in SH4\ and install with the JSGME as usual.

Optional, you may delete the Gui folder (Data\Menu\Gui) if you don't want colored tools icones.

Dissregard my last, I redownloaded teh Menue file and it works fine.
Thanks, it really un clutters the screen much better Thanks in advance, now if someone can tell me how to get rid of the bars across my screen , sometimes they are there, sometimes they are not, it appears to be some sort of graphics issue .

@ zAmboni - Visually, I kinda liked the idea the devs had for the new tools set, but they just didn't turn out to be as easy to use, so this is a great addition :up:

Sorry I havent been following the thread here, I have been off playing the sim :).

I should probably update the file (readme) showing what settings in the menu_...ini file that I changed. It is tough trying to figure out what is going on sometimes if people have additional mods that modify the menu_...ini file.

I know what you mean. I like an uncluttered workspace, and the new tools are just too big and gaudy on the screen.

Just a note, I may have mentioned it before above, With the new tools, the devs changed the code somehow where the clickable area for the tool is in the shape of the tool itself (the default SH4 tool shape). That is why in the mod it is so tough to actually click the marker tool. They made the shape of the clickable area in the shape of a pencil, and the shape does not correspond to the shape of the pencil in the mod. I havent figured out a way to make the entire square clickable though.

A bit of thinking out of the box so to speak. Leave the pencil where it is and just reduce it's size. Have that box used for the pen to load a 360 degree bearing plot map for combat.
