**Released** Deadlier Aircraft v1.0

created by nvdrifter

What this mod changes:

a) Tougher enemy aircraft:

All aircraft are now 2-3 times tougher. Aircraft will now be much more difficult to shoot down. I felt that it was just too easy to shoot down enemy aircraft in vanilla SH4.

b) Deadlier aircraft bombs and air depth charges:

The bomb and air depth charge damage blast radius has been increased. Bomb and air depth charge blast damage has been greatly increased.

c) More aircraft patrols and more chance of being detected:

There will now be many more enemy aircraft patrols. Your chance of being detected and attacked by enemy aircraft is also greatly increased.

With the possible execption of some of the Flying boats, the Japanese aircraft were easier to shoot down that their allied counterparts. With no Self-sealing fuel tanks, no pilot armor, and no protection for the engines, and crude (if any) fire suppression systems, they could dish out a lot of punishment, but were not really the beat at taking it. An example, The G4M1 "Betty" bomber had no protection for it's fuel tanks until mid 1943, then 30 mm rubber ply sheet was applied externally to the underside of the wings, the tops still not having that thin comfort. In addition 2 x 5mm (Yup, that's right 5mm) armor plates were added behind the tail cannon, to protect the ammo supply. The G4M3 added fuel tanks with internal protection, but they only entered service in October 1944, with sometihing like 90 built.

And that transitions to the next concern. The IJN lost the war. From the beginning the aircraft was never the Nemesis of the Fleet sub. They had to husband their air assets, because they never had enough to go around. A lot of the air attacks were made, but they were generally by Aircraft providing escort for convoys or important ships, patrolling choke points, or standing patrols around ports and harbours. The IJN never had enough long range maritime patrol aircraft to mount Hunter killer ops. Also, with nothing at all like Leigh lights, Millimeter radar, or "Fido" homing torps, they were mostly daylight hunters.

and a pre-emptive "Mea Culpa" due to the sensor thread.....Nvdrifter, I did not intend in any way to bash your efforts, or the efforts of any of the modders whos work we all enjoy.

I want SH3 and SH4 to be the best, most realistic Subsims out there, bar none. and if changes are needed, than I'm all for them. I'm just wanting to clarify if changes are needed in this area.

And again, my sincere apology if you feel I've over stepped my bounds.

Yes, I do know about the less armored Japanese aircraft, but in vanilla SH4, it only takes a couple of shots and any enemy aircraft is toast. In real life, it just wasn't that easy. They can still be shot down, just not quite as easily now. And there will be more risk trying to.

Which is how it should be. No skipper would feel comfortable cruising along at a leisurely pace with aircrafts around. They might be cardboard thin, but a wounded or dead crewmember is no joke. Good job. Ain't got the game yet and mods are already out :hmm:

I FELT - I THINK - TO MEE. Instead of RESEARCH. Are gamers just lamers when it comes to books or internet research?

At least this was answered in good fashion. But I can once again see a host of mods made for 3 year olds.

Theres nothing wrong with a little bit of personal preference. I mean GWX is one of the most carefully researched mods out there and there are still a few salts out there with their own tweaks for it.

I remember way back around SH3s release when there were dozens and dozens of mods that changed this and that cause some people preferred it that way or they thought that this or that was missing. Eventually all that moddin got rolled into a few big mods.

Its how it all works.

I think common sense is a decent enough gauge, and it can be substantiated with fact - no records show that a sub ever was an effective anti-air weapon; not even the vaunted U-flaks - forget American subs with their few small-caliber machineguns!

If the somewhat tougher plane results in your sub becoming an inefficient (in the sense of not really being worth the risk of duking it out) anti-air platform as it should be, I think it's a fair tradeoff.

I agree: no aircraft should ever be taken lightly. I'm not so sure about depth-charges, but if the net result is that diving is the only real option, I'm for it.

Makes sense. US Sub skippers had a VERY healthy respect for Japanese aircraft.

Thanks NVdrifter !

Thank you much for the mod nvdrifter. Downloaded and waiting for sh4 to arrive.

Airplanes should always be avoided by subs rather than engaged.

Yeah well to me, I feel, think, that you're free to jump off the side of your submarine. Have a nice swim.
