So - I went on my first ever TLAM Surface Strike Mission

Had not done this before, but had read about it on the forums

I started out stuck between a couple of ASW ships (there was also a Soviet chopper working the area)

So I figured - if I sit here and launch all 12 of my Tomahawk missiles, they will be all over me like white on rice - I will be dead before I get all 12 off

Lets be smart about this

The Tomahawk missile has several hundreds miles range at least (I think?) - so lets head North and launch well away from any Soviet ASW Ships

I settle for this -about 210, 000 yards (about 120 miles?)

First problem - but not the one I am posting about - during time compression during my run North, the conditions tab showed me a sea bottom of over 1000 feet. As soon as I came out of TC I was actually under the sea floor and taking damage

A few seconds after this the conditions tab reset to about 300 feet

I survived this with minimal damage and set about launching all 12 of my TLAMS

This is where the frustration set in

I followed every one in and they all did exactly the same thing

They got as far as the spit of land just in front of my target and then circled into the sea and exploded

I watched every single one do this

Was I being too cute by heading 120 miles North first?

IS it that the game is only programmed to guide TLAMS in from approximately where you spawn in to the mission?

Or am I missing something obvious, and there is something I should have done first to make the TLAMS work?

Any feedback would be appreciated :)

Oh Damn - just had an idea

Is is possible the ASW vessels in the harbour somehow spoofed the missile guidance system?

TLAM rely on inertial guidance for over water flight. There is no way to get mess with it. Overland they use basically terrain matching, which again is pretty countermeasure proof. I'd say definitely a bug.

Getting under the land:
Sounds like you had the camera on another object. Sailed far to the north, beyond the terrain chunks. Upon returning the camera back to your sub, terrain was generated, putting you under it.

This is a known limitation of the terrain system which we're looking into.

TLAM Launches:
Did you zoom in the map, and set the TLAM waypoints in the blue circle just north of the target area? Any TLAM reaching its waypoint inside the deployment zone (blue circle) will then auto-home in on its target.

This mission was scary for me, in that I didn't realize the point was to launch at the circle. I thought the mission required me to launch from WITHIN the circle.

My mission was eventful.

Given the very shallow water and enemy presence (there's a Bear-F, too,) I knew I had to be direct, in order to have the peace to approach and fire a few salvos. So, I went rock-n-roll on the Grishas and everything else I could reach. Eventually ran the helo out of torps, and headed straight for the "launch point."

That's when the Bear started making his runs.

I was avoiding his torpedoes nicely, and got within the circle, though I couldn't spare the attention to fire anything. I got three fish behind me, and was easily avoiding them. One ran out of energy. Then, one other. The last of them then drove in and killed me. It just ignored the same tactics and distractions that had worked on it before, and got me.

Now, I'm almost glad to know my mission was doomed from the start, because firing from the target circle would have failed me anyway. I would have been livid.

after a six year silent run!

I had to surface. It was getting pretty rank in here!

(Oh, I meant my own personal submarine! Not judging this fine forum!)

Yea, that's what I thought too. Need to go back and read the briefing but it should be made clearer to the player that the circle is the initial nav point for the TLAM rather than a launch point.

Figured it would be something like that
I was running time compression for a long time!
Good to know you are looking into it

Now I didn't take any screenies at time of launch so the image below has been edited from memory, but my launch points were something like this

Looks like my waypoints were too far North of the target area?

Next time I will put the TLAM waypoint inside the edge of the target circle and see what happens

Many thanks for the response KFG
