Capt. Wills was probably the best officer I ever served with. I remember when we came out of new construction and proceeded to Bremerton, Wash. for sound proofing. Capt Wills was on the fast track for promotion and wanted to get extra points. While in drydock in Bremerton, he bought a case of Simoniz wax. After they painted the hull with the special coating, the Capt. had the entire crew out waxing the entire hull. I had the honor of wire brushing, sharping the prop edges , and waxing the prop. Chief and I obtained a giant duplex pressure guage for the first stage pressure on the main turbines. This is the only way to truly balance the two turbines exactly. You only get two speed trial runs. The first run, we came up .2 knots below the record. The chief and I ran throughout the ship securing electrical, aux steam, etc. The second run shattered the record and put us in good favor with the Skipper. What was really great about this was, the crew didn't mind spending all those hours waxing the hull. He was truly an inspiration and the epitomy of a leader.

I served aboard uss balao ss285 in key west from 1953 thru 1956. I was aboard when a short movie was produced circa 1955. I believe the film was titled "clear the bridge, dive dive" or something similar to that. I am looking for anybody who was a crewmember back then who could shed some light on where i could find where this film might be located. I put 20 years in the navy and went to sea two days aboard surface ships. i completed 12 strategic deterrent patrols on FBMs, thanks for any help. some of my fondest memories was aboard balao. we helped set up the Canaveral firing range with archerfish circa 1954.i consider myself very fortunate to have served in such a diverse assortment of subs.

Looking for photography, good or bad, of the USS Barbel (SS-316) sister ship to the Cavalla that was launched the same day, same place, just feet apart. The Barbel was bombed and sunk with all hands lost in Feb, 1945 in South China Sea. The submariners building the Lost boat memorial in Casper, Wyoming need help in finding any photos you may have taken or obtained with the 316 in the shot. I would like to tell how proud I am of my Grandpa. As providence would have it I am here today and he is still kicking at close to 83 yrs old. During World War 2 Grandpa was on the SS Swordfish when he got very very sick I believe it was the Measles. He was taken to shore and left at the doctor ect.. When the Swordfish returned to sea it was hit and sunk loosing all on board. Grandpa was spared but devestated at the loss of all his shipmates. I'm sure hes wondered countless times why God chose to let him get sick rather than parish with the others. I love him and am so glad he is still here with us. Your post was from 1998 and I don't know if you ever got a response from anyone. My sister, Jennifer Watkinson, is married to his son. I am writing to you on behalf of them. William H. Watkinson, Sr., died on August 27, 1997 after a battle with stomach cancer. His wife, Irene Covello Watkinson, died six months later of ovarian cancer. They were living in Palm Bay, Florida at the time. Bill owned and operated a locksmith business in Palm Bay. Bill and Irene had eight children.... six girls and two boys. This work is unique because all the characters have bylines and thus the opportunity to reveal what they did and how they felt during an era of unprecedented destruction. The online excerpts are from the points-of-view of Hitler and six other characters.
Admirals Raeder and Doenitz also have plenty of bylines, and there's a piece from the point of view of a wolfpack commander, Otto Kretchmer.
At the 2004 Frankfurt Book Fair, HITLER HERE generated reading copy requests from several foreign publishers, and the English language rights in India have just been sold to Mastermind Books And in late January 2005, Mladá Fronta offered to publish the work in the Czech Republic. .

To anyone who recognises the details in thid section, The details belong to the late Trevor thomas mccoy whom passed this year 19/07/03 in Cardiff from where he originated. His position on the vessels mentioned, was a fireman/stoker. He had a wonderful time at sea and to the end of his days often longed to return for 1 last voyage. Now he leaves behind a widow, Joyce and 8 grown children and numerous grand and great grand children. Im his youngest son Terence, and if anyone remembers my Father and may have pictures of him or the vessels mentioned then it would be very special if I could optain copies of these for a memorial cabinet i'm trying to put together for his widow. Today I am posting to check for old "Jolly-Dolly" crew mates that may recall me and like to rekindle some memories of those days gone by. I served on board the USS James Madison SSBN 627 from JAN79 to AUG79. What would distinguish me is I served on board with an identical twin brother in the Sonar Gang.
We made a cruise to "Rosie Rhodes" on one patrol. This patrol commenced shortly following the Super-bowl football game that year if memory serves me correctly. I also passed ships qualification on this patrol. I distinctly recall trying to read and commit to memory a two volume notebook set each over 300 pages in length that seemed to detail every system in the boat ‘fore’ to ‘aft’ and ‘port’ to ‘starboard’ and overhead to bilge’s below. The other recollection I have from this 1st cruise is that we somehow bent our screw (do not know whether this was from one of Madison’s running aground episodes or not), and we put ourselves into a floating dry dock for a quick replacement…
On the 2nd cruise, which followed after a brief liberty in our home port of Charleston (approximately 2 weeks) the boat tracked up the coast to go in for her Trident refit. The 2nd cruise was B/G combined crew. I well remember the chain gang boat loading parties for food stores. Who could forget the mass of those overweight boxes passed hand to hand all the way from dockside to the galley stores. I do recall too feeding the fish an accidentally dropped case of chitterlings.
If you served aboard the USS James Madison SSBN 627 and have a recollection to share back with me, I would very much appreciate your correspondence. It would also interest me to learn of any James Madison crew reunion functions. I’m proud of the heritage that silent service has given me and it would be gratifying to see more movies, books, etc. sharing the secret lives of the selected servicemen who won the cold war for America. I actually had the pleasure of riding the SS-352 for 5 days as there was an emergency ships movement and alot of us could not get back to ship before movement. My ship had left, but the ET on SS-352 could not be found. I was given the ooption of riding the Sub or stay ashore, I took the Sub and was very enjoyable. As with so many of us older land based, now retired, and now having the time to look at our [for lack of a better term ]endangerd memories just wanting to get in touch with some of my shipmates whom I have not seen or heard from in 40 years of what happened to you, and how you are now, I know many of us have gone on that 'Eternal Patrol' So now those of us still serving, must raise our coffee cup and say 'hold on, see you again,and no hotbunking' We who were diseal boat sailors know that saying. This is his sister, He has passed away( nov 1st2002) & we can not find any info, on him ,,need s/s # & whatever we can to give him what they need to do right by him. He did have a purple heart,, in wwII, However in his last days ,He choose to spend the rest of his days up in the mountains by himself. he has no other records than his navy exp. A lot of good memories from the 20+ years in the Navy. Lots of good shipmates too. That tour on LHA5 had to be the worst 18 months I had, just not the same quality of sailors. Never enough guys to get the work done on any command, but on the boats we always did get it done some how. I've heard of alot of the guys I knew that are gone now, and hope some that I've lost track of might send a note. Be good to hear from them. Never did convert to MM even though Bupers said we had to or never go back to a boat. DBF
