Default Your longest depth charge pounding

Just curious: How long have you endured a DC attack? Did you use TC at all? Damage sustained and Did you survive?

So far, I used 1xTC and endured Two hours from 2 escorts: 49% Hull Int remained, No casualties, made it back to base in Apr 44

the lack dd ability to keep track and to pursuit me for a considerable time, was one of the major down sides for me in sh3. the gw mod definetly improved the game in this regard. im on my 10th gw patrol now, and i had three instances, where destroyers detected me, and tried to hunt me down. one of those dc hunts lasted well over 2 hours game time. i received light damages. another dc hunt lasted roughly 90mins, and i took a severe beating, with flooding, and forward batteries destroyed. i had to limp back to base. this was also the first time that i saw a dd actualy expending his dc stock. all of this happend in a timeframe from sept 40 till feb 42.
the asdic efficiancy is still bugged imho.

What part of ASDIC do you not like? :hmm:

The only thing I see wrong with it, that I know of, is that there is no loss of contact after DC explosions....There should be at least a minute of "Dead" time....

The longest would be the one I got pounded with 170+ charges from 5 destroyers in ~35-40m deep waters. And just to make it more exciting, it was a WaW patrol.

I lost 1 man and sustained medium damage to the boat.

My Longest endured depthcharge run, that I survived would have to be around an hour real time.

Believe it was around June of 41, 11:00 from a convoy sneaking in at 4 knots submerged. At precisly 1:14 I fired my first salvo of torpedos at a T3 tanker in the midst of the convoy (2 trops set at 5 degrees differance, steam, fast, 950mtrs) Both torps were a hit, launched second salvo at 1:16 at a T2 tanker which was forced to slow to due to the wreckage of the T3 (which had began to show signs of flooding by listing to port) Both torps were a hit. I then ordered ahead flank and began to show my back side to the convoy hoping to get at least one more torp off. I rather blindly fired my stern torpedo into the belly of a C2 around 1500 mtrs away, and miraculously scored a hit! My most succesfull opening barrage of a convoy!

I quickly dove to 100mtrs and tried my best to sneak out at 2 knots. The sonar man whispers the bearings of the closing warships! Contact Kriegshief bearing 112, 170, 75. They were all behind me and to the right, so I ordered a course of 280 in hopes that that would be my gopher hole out of this mess.

As me and sonar man listened intently, we waited as 2 of the destroyers closed and the killed thier engines...... while the one bearing 180 (one originaly bearing 75) closed in. They were going to triangilate my depth and range, major pucker factor. I dove deeper, to around 150mtrs and crept along at 1 knot, then came the splashes. The first barrage was shallow and to the rear. But the second barrage would be right on the money. Major damage to the stern one baty severly dmaged the other barely in working order, not casualties. Heavy flooding in all stern compartments, the depth needle sank further I killed the engines and used all excess men and repair crew to patch up the breaches in the hull, after around 10 min of intense dc and shift my crew around plugging up the holes in my tub the flooding was under control.

The destroyes began to retreat to the debris field where the T2 hand sank I assumed they were picking up survivors, I slow rose to p depth and lay in wait for a tubes to reload. The T3 was listing more now as the waters flodding the port compartments, I would finish her off before nightfall with the DG. The C2 on the other hand was dead in the water some 600mtrs to my right around 107 degrees. I set up for attack and launched my final barrage salvo of 2, one dud but the other broke its back. In a great ball of fire (hehehe) it sank beneath the waves. I slowly headed out from the pack and that is where I waited till night fall. I then surfaced and sank the T3 with the DG.

Quite an experiance. I'm looking forward to the GW mod now, which I am dl at the moment, hence the long read.

I think my longest was 4 hours. About everything on deck was smashed. Deck gun, flak gun, snorkel, periscopes, radar, RWR, you name it.

I had this one escort that wouldnt give up either, i seriously think he ran out of depth charges because he kept making runs, but not dropping any ashcans.

Just finished a homemade scenario, Spr 44 , attacking a British Surface action group: 2 CL, 4 DD, made an attack run on the CLs, and missed

Then 1 DD attacked, then after an hour, 2 more DDs were in on the act...

Another Hour passed which I took some minor damage, but the BAD thing is that one after the other, the DDs made runs on me...no ASDIC dead time where they would lose contact with me...

This makes it all but impossible to evade them...I tried to escape NE, but I made the mistake of using 8x TC....I got hit in the bow, before I knew it, Flooding was out of control and I made the final plunge to 350+m

Does anybody know if any of the mods correct this very serious flaw in SHIII?

Try the GW super mod, much more believable DD action. They're much more realistic in that they don't drop DC's which ALWAYS land on your conning tower :rotfl:

Ah, a cool topic if may say!
My longest DC was 3 and somethin' hours real time!

After huntin' down a rather small group of ships, and sinking most of them some 100 miles fromm the British coast, the pay-off arrived on form of 4 massive and angry DD.

They chased me deeper and deeper into the dark and dropped that almost neverneding stock of DC.

I was close to despair. everytime i thought i excaped, i hard that sodding"ping" again and felt like weepin'.
There was some serious damage to my Sub but god bless my Virtual CE he did a good job.

It was nerve-whackin' and as i managed to escape after what seemed like ages; i felt so tired and worn-out i just saved the game and went to bed...and had nightmares about gettin DC'ed ...lol

I will think twice about hunting a "small" group ever again.

:hmm:

Two hours real time, off Port of Spain. My IXc vs. an American Uber DD - a lousy old 4-stack Clemson class of all things. I almost shook him a couple times; he'd move off to about 1500m or so - just enough to make me think he was taking off - and then come in again without a single active ping. Finally, in exasperation, I told Wolfgang to turn on the gramaphone and we'd all sing until the destroyer left. If Curt Jurgens cand do it, so can I. We died shortly thereafter.

Last night I survived a two hours pounding in real time.
I was able to TC a little so it was probably more like 3 hours game time.

I was stupid enough to attack a convoy in about 65-75m of depth on the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. Given how shallow I had to keep the boat, I'm really amazed to have survived.

It was really exhausting to keep track of each and every DC run on the hydrophone, and then take evasive maneuvers. After about 1and 1/2 hours, I started to TC up to 8X while the warship swung around to my stern. Then I would go back to 1X and listen for the inevitable DC splashes.

"All ahead flank!"

Somehow we suffered only light damage on 2 runs that was easily repaired.

A miracle. We surfaced hours later and began tracking the convoy again...

Hi,

I know there is a considerable time-lapse betwwen this and other posts within this thread but since there are no others more recent ...

My longest chase started yesterday (GWX Gold and SH 3 Commander used) ended after 8-in game hours. with a type IXC/40 in march of 43 I attacked a convoy off Portugal. ( used time compressinon up to 10x).

After sinking Ceramic class liner, small ocean liner and one type 23 cargo ship (MFM mod), the torment began. Receieved an unforzunate DC hit close to connnning tower disabling it completely/periscopes gone. after two hoursH.I. is at 97 % evasion sucessful so far, but evasuion from the two escorts impossible. Using Bold 1's but to no avail. After next two hours receieved another close explosion - H.I. down to 88%.

My depth troughout the chase vared between 165 and 220 m - I tried to stay above 200 m but trying to escape at creeping speed of 1 knot the boat started diving so I was below the 200 m at least three times.

In the end I guerss the SH3 crush depth randomiser got me - the boat strated to take damage at 195 m, and the H. I counter began dropping rapidly (at 10 % step) - so I got crushed at 130 m trying desperately to blow ballast.

The persistent escort I guess were Black Swan Frigates - I think their DC capacity is considerably greater than other DC's in the game.
