Hello all!
![]() My chosen internet/online name's Narf, sometimes Narf60 if unavailable. I'm somewhat new to serious submarine simulators so I registered here needing all the help I could get. It was only now that I started to lurk a lot more around here did I notice a friendly welcoming message in my inbox with some encouragement to introduce myself to the community. So . . . I have a lot of varied experience fighting on land, both in real life from my 6-almost seven years in the US Army as well as taking up many different roles in many military simulators (primarily the Arma series, heavily modded for further realism of course). I've always been curious about how warfare was/is conducted by the other branches and always enjoy learning the sciences that go into their doctrines/tactics/strategies ect. I always had a soft spot in my heart for submarine warfare from an ancestor's war journal apparently written entirely under the lighting from his station/quarters aboard a german u boat. My german isn't so great anymore and I've only been read bits and pieces of this diary from my grandparents here and there as a younger child, so it further amplified my curiosity. And so I finally installed my copies of Silent Hunter 3 & 5 I purchased from steam and tried to dive right in. I find that its been difficult for me to quickly absorb and apply the maths/tactics of torpedo gunnery from a distance or against multiple targets. I found myself more often than not trying to force a U Boot to behave more akin to a tank or armored fighting vehicle with close quartered hit and run tactics, which don't work so well apparently. I also think that the interfaces betray realistic torpedo gunnery as their layouts don't facilitate quick firing solution input (especially vanilla SH5). So, I'll be poking my head in more between patrols probably with questions or disastrous recaps. Until then, see you later |
