Many Americans have no friends of another race: poll

(Reuters) - About 40 percent of white Americans and about 25 percent of non-white Americans are surrounded exclusively by friends of their own race, according to an ongoing Reuters/Ipsos poll.

The figures highlight how segregated the United States remains in the wake of a debate on race sparked by last month's acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of unarmed black Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. President Barack Obama weighed in after the verdict, calling for Americans to do some "soul searching" on whether they harbor racial prejudice.

Not sure what to think of this.

I'm surrounded by friends of my race only because it's where I live. There's one person that's half of a different race. I've got nothing against them.

I've got friends around the country that are of a different race but I don't regularly see them.

Some of that statistic is probably just because of where people live. If you live in a backwoods Catholic farming community that isn't on the map, I doubt you'll see too many minorities. I'm not saying it isn't possible...but this statistic doesn't mean we're all racists.

I live in a very diversified town, we seem to have every kind of person imaginable. Hell, this buddy of mine wants to turn Canada into an Islamic republic

We live in a multicultural society, and for me personally, I have good experiences with people from different countries, which has been rewarding especially related to my travels and in Sweden.

Too much IFs in this poll to prove anything.

Close friends all people you hang out in general. is 40% of Americans just less traveled. Is mixed races included in the questionare and how does one interpret mixed races. Does someone choose not to hang out with someone different or just didn't met someone different that one might call him a friend.
