Default SH4 ATO or SH5?

Hi guys, I've been away from Silent Hunter community for too long, but recently bought a new book which brought back in some enthusiasm for WW2 subs.

After reading some reviews, it seems that SH5 wasnt well received by the public for being unstable and filled with bugs.

Compared to SH4 + Real Fleet Boat + ATO and Trigger Maru, which I currently have shelved, how good is SH5 nowadays? Should I buy it instead?

any help is really appreciated!
cheers

I tried it. But...I don´t know. It feels clumsy and very "laggy". The UI is not what one might say, intuitive and friendly as SH4.
Graphics and the Atlantic World Data are great tho.

Then I tried to apply all the mods that were recommended here, trying to correct the flagrant flaws the game easily shows up but...dont get me wrong, no criticism for my part, I REALLY appreciate all the hard work that some gents had put voluntarly here, but for the people who were here from the beginning and were present during the mods evolution´s time line, its probably pretty straight forward. But for an outsider like me, caught in the middle of a copyrights war, it feels like playing treasure hunt: You´re in the middle of a sandy beach and you find a hint that needs to be decyphered, then you keep searching on lucks will til you find the next hint and you keep doing this, through dead links, complex mod´s configuration/personalization/activationg and patching, incomplete readmes (at least for an outsider)..It´s just way too much!

I just wish we could port the Atlantic World and campaing into SH4 or at least port the SH4 into SH5´s Atlantic World itself.

Or I guess I´m just late.

Hi Stormrider
After being used to the expected product of SH3, SH4 and now SH5 from UBISOFT, I feel like it's all part of the fun now. In fact, I've gotten so used to modding my game it almost feels like my own private picture. Mods are now half the fun. How can we make this look and play better. And (it's only my opinion) my game looks and acts pretty awesome compared to a lot of other simulations. This is no arcade game, the map is huge and SH5 has to render a whole world, well, it does it's best and I'm firing up a convoy tonight. My boat looks and performs great and I have an AI crew that at least obeys my commands. Most all of my "vanilla bugs" are in the past. We owe some of it to UBISOFT and the rest to all the Players/Modders.

That's exactly what people said about SH4 compared to SH3. I found SH5's UI to be just fine. Not what I was used to, but no worse. On the other hand I don't like SH3's all that much. I use a mod there that clears the screen entirely and makes everything a slideout. Also TDW's UI mod replicates SH3's and SH4's, so there shouldn't a problem.

SH4 has a perfectly good Atlantic campaign in Operation Monsun. All it lacks is some of SH3's detail mods.

I´d tried using JSGME to install mods, like I´ve been doing with SH4, specially those UI recommended on the noob mods guide, but its wierd, nothing changed in-game! I dont even know if the other mods are working. Tell me more about TDW´s SH4 UI, do you know how to configurate it? Can it really match SH4´s UI?

Yesterday I went back to SH4, just to have some fun after a weekened in frustration. Man, TMO´s UI, I love it. You know, all stations only a click away, the TDC as hide-able sidebars, the map tools so user friendly, I can even plan an attack in the heart of a convoy and succeed after not having played it in a about 3 years! Not to mention all thos "sub-menus" orders like Sonar follow nearest contact, or max range at current speed...

Cheers
