What about her? She was a legend, the fastest ocean liner of her day, and Revell made a very nice little model of her back when I was a boy.

Like the Wiki article says, she's in storage in Philadelphia, with no concrete plans but ongoing negotiations about maybe bringing her to NYC for display there. Still nothing agreed on, though.

Judging by the appearance of the cabins, somebody better bring a rack of mops and several gallons of Pledge.

"To minimize the risk of fire, the designers of United States used no wood in the ship's framing, accessories, decorations or interior surfaces." Makes me wonder if they didn't use wood just what did they use? No need for Pledge! IMO though they probably can't readily scrap the hulk for the same reason they can't turn it into a public museum. Asbestos and other nasty hazards used in great quantities when she was built. . Last edited by Rockstar; 12-24-11 at 09:59 AM. |

But the SS United States still owns the trans atlantic crossing record for over fifty years now.
She was filled with asbestos which is a big no no in todays ships But she was towed to Turkey several years ago and had the asbestos removed I think the USS Ethan Allen SSBN 608 had asbestos ... perhaps I can sue the navy.

From what I've heard she was bought by some people who want to preserve her.
