Default Map Contacts

I've been playing SH3 + GWX3.0 and I have just come to wonder about the fact that GWX says 100% realism even when Map Contact is on.

Just wondered how Map Contacts can be justified as 100% realism?

Just wanted to know...

You have the options available to make the game almost as realistic as you want...turn the map contacts off.

Can you show me where it says that?

It would make it much easier for me to answer definitively then.

I should have probably gotten the picture first.
That woud be my fault.

It's not that I don't welcome using it, it's just that wanted to know the reason as to why the game would consider map contacts as realistic.

So far, I just use the reason that my watch officer find the range of the ships and I use that to get its path and find the angle at bow with it, as well as the speed. I just wanted to know if there was another reason or that the reason given is acceptable...

Oh and thanks for reminding to get the picture.

No problem....U-boats were very carefully controlled by Bdu and as such were in regular radio contact (one of the main reasons for their eventual demise).

Navigation maps were regularly updated with contacts from a variety of sources Bdu, Spies, Condors, U-boats etc.).

You will notice that the contact only remains visible for a short period of time meaning you have to 'plot' your own course and interception.

You can go to the other end of the spectrum if you wish and download my SpySat mod, this will regularly update your map with most of whatever is in the SH3/GWX world but be warned, it is a game killer for those who prefer as much realism as possible.

When we developed GWX we tried to get a mix/blend of historical accuracy and gameplay immersion....add to that the mods that are contained within and I'd like to think we did a pretty fair job in catering for most peoples tastes.

GWX is now something like four years old but given the amount of mods created by some really innovative modders since then I honestly believe SH3 as an 'old' game, coupled with GWX and other supermods such as NYGM etc. has stood the test of time and given value for money to the subsimming community.

SINK EM ALL!!

If you're snorkelling and you do not have Map Contacts enabled, aircraft will never appear on the map screen. The first sign of them will be taking damage when you are hit by rockets or depth charges. You cannot solely depend on your mast-mounted radar detectors since a number of airborne attackers are not equipped with radar.

Realistically, somebody (not the Captain) was always manning a periscope while the boat snorkelled to look for visual threats and contacts. In SH3 you would have to do that in real time, for yourself for the time it takes to charge batteries or transit from A to B. So using Map Contacts On in late war patrols substitues for your periscope watch. It might offend some people's sense of "realism" but it is certainly a reasonable solution given the restrictions imposed by the "game".
