My thoughts are the game (V) is not doomed but typicaly hampered by needed patch work and Ubi's requirements. So it may never see some machines.
III is an awsome game now, but we need to remember what was done to get it there.

And it still has so many annoying flaws. The thought that SH3 might be 'it' depresses me even more than usual.

Precisely, I'm hoping after a patch or two we will be looking at a far better game.

I'm hoping that Ubi left a lot of room for modders to maneuver.

One problem with this approach is they may have left a lot of loose ends thinking the modders would take care of it.

I'm hopeful, for example, that they left room for modders to add different subs to the game.

I see no reason to buy SH5 yet. Like i usually do with simulators i buy them way later, a months or year(s) after they came out and in SH5 case i wait until it gets fully patched, modded and, obviously, until this idiotic DRM (permanent internet connection requirement) is removed.

Now i have SH3 GWX and SH4 Trigger Maru overhauled, thats all i need. Why SH5?'

PS: And i need new computer to play it anyway)

And that's exactly the mindset I don't like. "Being moddable" is often just a lame excuse for shoddy out-of-the-box games that need some serious tinkering to live up to their full potential - or at least be playable.

Seriously: I expect a program to be playable out of the box, and I think programmers have failed if mods are needed - and I generally don't install them. I just won't buy the game, even if mods could help it.

Add to that Ubi's obscene DRM policy, and you get a product that's not even flawed, but one you don't even own.

SHIII may not have been perfect out of the box - but I enjoy it, unmodded. And lack of DRM (and eventually Starforce, because I was one of those who bought it right after it came out) is so obviously what I expect a game that I don't even consider it as a positive aspect. It's just how it should be.
