Default i did the unthinkable

Boss called my cell phone, and in my haste to shut down sh3 and log back into my work machine, i did a save and exit. WHILE SUBMERGED.

Later, I picked a save from when I was in port... it worked for a while, then CTD. I saved while submerged once before, and I think I ended up deleting everything and having to redownload from steam, and reinstall everything. Please say it isn't so!

As far as I was aware, the saving while submerged bug can just cause you to sink to your doom. Am I unaware of something more sinister?

Why don't you load a previous save or restart your patrol? It is just a ctd and personally i've never read before anything about formating the disk or re-installing sh3 after experiencing a ctd.

I think it's far more sinister that that, as in "welcome to ctd land." I will try starting ANOTHER new career.

Doesn't make sense to me. A save state isn't going to modify the code like that.

You didn't happen to hit that surface cruise crew button? That's the only thing I know of that causes constant CTD's.

Right then. I double dog dare you to save and exit while submerged!

(I actually don't recommend this)

All I know is, right after I clicked "save and exit" I said some bad words, because I was geeked hard the last time I had done it. And sure enough, load up the save, CTD. And load previous save, CTD. Later today I'll start a new career, and see. I expect a CTD, unfortunately.

I also did NOT make a backup of my local files as soon as I had my last "install" from steam, so I may have to go through another download, and all that again. I'll update when I know something, maybe it's just some bizarre coincidence, but I hadn't had a CTD for quite a while, and expected to be geeked from my error (I had promised myself NEVER to save while submerged, but was distracted.)

Forgot to mention, no, I don't use those crew configuration buttons.

You know I've always wondered about that, the GWX manual mentions it too IIRC. But I use all of those buttons to move crew around and always have and it's never been a problem.

Maybe, I should rephrased that. It's the only thing I've heard of that causes CTD's. I never used those buttons myself; and after reading about it in that GWX manual, i never ventured to try.

As for saving submerged and reloading from there, I think I did that once in vanillia (remember I did that in case I missed, which I did, so reloaded... didn't exit the game entirely though, could have made a difference, i guess.) and don't remember anything that serious happening. Think all it did was erase all my plot points and reset the torpedo computer. Don't remember having a CTD problem, or it killing the career can't recall if the sub broke or not; don't think it did. I could test it out again with GWX.... I just never bothered, because GWX takes so long to load up.

I follow a general rule for saving. As in, I don't do it when there are any visible ships nearby. So being submerged while saving isn't really much of a problem when following the rule. And I'll just pause the game, if I have something that needs to be done, when my save rule can't be followed. But I don't use my PC for anything serious. Only use it for entertainment. So, I don't have to worry about any Boss forcing me to do something on *my* time.

Try going back to a previous save and if that doesn't work, start a new career.

When I'm in the middle of an action and have to leave suddenly, I always just shut it off. I know you're not supposed to do that ever, but it saves a lot of headaches with the game.

Okay, I started a new career. Made it through 2 patrols, sunk 3 targets near Gibraltar, escaped from an approaching dd, now Sept. 6, docked at Corrientes supply ship. I think I'm all okay now.

Thanks for listening, and for the advise. I don't believe I'll save while submerged (or near land, or near a ship) again! I'm glad the career I had to abandon was fairly new!
