Bundesarchiv said : "Frankreich, Lorient.- U-Boot U 31 auf Slipp"

I agree with you, this is not a type VIIA
Can you identified this U-Boat Type II ?
Hi!

Several Type II U-boats visited Lorient in the late summer and fall of 1940, according to the individual patrol records at uboat.net.

Type IIC: U-56, U-57, U-58, U-59, U-60, and U-61

Type IID: U-137, U-138

I cannot really tell from the photo which of these it might have been.

Pablo

After looking at the pictures, it can not have been U-56, U-57, U-58, since they did not have the wire cutters.

It could have been U-59, U-61, since the wire cutters can clearly be seen in their pictures.

U-60, U-137 or U-138 I can't tell, since the bow of the U-boat is not visible in the pictures.

This would suggest it is a Type IID:

See that it has wirecutters not only above the water line, but also under, at the torpedo tubes?
The boat in the picture also has that, but the Type IIC didn't, according to Uboat.net:

I agree with you.
I think it's U-138 (Type IID)
U-Boat.net said :
26 Sep, 1940
A few hours before reaching her base at Lorient, U-138 encountered the British submarine HMS Tribune which fired four torpedoes towards the German sub. None hit the U-boat, which escaped and reached its base.
