Help w/ avoiding getting TD'ed

I found a TF of three escorts and two huge liners. Once the destroyerse move to my direction, I go to battle stations, run silent and dive past the thermal layer. Despite doing all that, I still get TD'ed and am unable to catch up to the liners. Any suggestions?

TIA!

What's TD'd? Tied down? Once you're detected, the hunt for merchies is over and you're engaged in evasion of escorts. In the meantime, the merchies will get away. So rule #1: don't be detected.

You have to start out in front of the convoy, go silent and wait for them. You should do this in the early nighttime, because you will probably be detected anyway and have to evade. With three escorts, usually two will be active and the third stationary and listening. Try to tag the stationary one with a shallow torpedo set to magnetic pistol. The big guys will get away if you're detected and have to go into evasion/kill escorts mode. That's why you did this in early evening. Just lose 'em and do another end-around.

This time set up on the other side of the convoy. You'll probably notice that the surviving escorts are bunched up still on the side you last attacked. This time you should be able to get in close and ventilate the sides of at least one merchie. If you do, the escorts know where you must have fired from. Evade, avoiding direct detection if possible, pull out, end-around and go for round 3.

Patience and stealth are your weapons and nothing happens in a hurry. Persistence is worth more than audacity here.
