Default XP Experts....

I know some of you are pretty savvy when it comes to XP, so I thought I would ask about good instructions on streamlining it and speeding it up.

I recently had to reformat and the computer seems to be running a lot slower than it used to. On my old format I had found a really nice tutorial on speeding things up but I can't find it now... I guess it made a huge difference because like I said, my computer is a hell of a lot slower now on a new install.

Thanks for the replies.

Try this site:

TweakGuides

Has lots of good optimization tips for XP, as well as graphics cards, and even games. Can all be dowloaded in a handy PDF, too

First thing to help when you do a rebuild of your HDD is to defrag. You should also look at getting a registry cleaner of some sort. Most of this is covered in the tutorial that was posted by KP.

Without checking the sites the other guys have recommended (so this is probably in there), the first one I do is:

My Computer/Properties/Advanced Tab/Performance Settings Button/Visual Effects Tab, then select 'Adjust for best performance'. It seems to make a difference to me.

Then kill all the unneccessary startup items with msconfig and, as already said, use defrag and ccleaner to keep it in shape.
