This is a revolutionary song (from the 1848' revolution in Baden) about Mr Hecker, who marched from Konstanz to storm the city of Karlsruhe, trying to overthrow the government of Baden, but which was subdued by prussian and hessian troops. Hecker and his troops retreated to Switzerland, but Hecker went to America as hundred thousand other germans, and fought as a republican in the northern army of the United States, during the civil war.
