I saw that article, thanks! I'm pretty sure I have seen his work in the model railroading magazines.

This is how it looked 3 1/2 years ago.

A lot more work has obviously gone into it since.

I always wanted a layout as a kid but my parents wouldn't have had the means

When I got married the notion resurfaced and I dreamed of having an 'N' gauge set to make the most of space... I so wanted to make the terrain and buildings etc as good as possible, this being as important to me as the track and rolling stock

I even got the first loco (a Graham Farish 'Britannia' Class, 4-6-2 I think) but that and a few trackside kits was as far as it ever got. Money again, I guess

Sir Rod Stewart has pledged £10,000 following the destruction of a model railway exhibition.

The 74-year-old singer and model railway enthusiast said he was "absolutely devastated" to hear that decades of work by the Market Deeping Model Railway Club had been trashed by vandals.

Stands were overturned and layouts were destroyed at a school in Stamford, Lincolnshire, on Saturday, where the club was holding its annual show.

Sir Rod said in a statement: "I was absolutely devastated to hear that vandals had destroyed what was to be a lovely show.

"The collection was priceless and I am donating £10,000 to help compensate those affected and asking fellow enthusiasts Jools Holland, Roger Daltrey and others to do the same."

He added: "It took me 23 years to build my model railway so I feel their pain."

Nice one Rod

WOULD THAT SIR RODERICK COULD HELP OUT WITH A SMALL PROBLEM WERE HAVING IN THE NAPA VALLEY WHERE THE VANDAL IS CORPORATE GREED. AFTER 40+ YEARS OF FREE TENANCY AT THE LOCAL FAIRGROUND, THE OLD QUONSET HUT HOME IS BEING REMOVED FOR ADDITIONAL PARKING??!! IT WOULD BE A SERIOUS TRAVESTY IF THIS WERE TO DISAPPEAR:https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Napa-Model-Railroad-Rumbles-Toward-a-Murky-Future-469997403.html THE GENERAL THEME IS A SCALE MODEL OF RAILROADING IN THE NAPA VALLEY BY DEDICATED ENTHUSIASTS. http://www.nvmrc.org/ ONE OF THE MANY TRAINS FROM THE OLD NAPA PIPE COMPANY NOW ABOUT TO BECOME A WALMART....MORE CORPORATE GREED!

That sucks but it doesn't look like they have much of a chance if the Fairground refuses to compromise. Finding a replacement home shouldn't be insurmountable though especially if a benefactor like Stewart steps forward. Might not be a bad idea to ask him. As for moving the layout I know it's tough to move things that weren't made with moving in mind but not impossible.

When I move my layout to the retirement home in a few years most of it will go with me. Mainly I will sacrifice all the terrain, roads, building foundations, scaffolding and wiring as well as the track and switches. Once that stuff is installed it doesn't de-install without destroying it so it will have to remain. But all the loco's, running stock, buildings, vehicles, lamp posts, figures, foliage, basically anything not nailed down (and can't be pried up somewhat intact), will go with me.

With that kind of head start I figure that it will only take a couple of years to rebuild it to a viewable state and I will do so with the lessons learned from first one in mind.
