4GB. People forget that the kernel is loaded into the last part of a 4GB system on a 4GB system. This allows your programs to have access to approximately 3.5GB with the system owning the rest. However, without the /3gb switch, a single program will only have access 2GB at a time unless that switch is present. Of course, sloppy programming means some applications will break with the /3gb switch, particular old software that wasn't designed on Visual Studio 6 or above. What happens is they expect the end of the address space to be 2GB and when its not, they freak out.
