Default How near do I have to be in order to get credit for a sinking?

I torpedoed a large merchant in a convoy the other day and then bravely ran deep and away. The ore carrier that I hit sank within minutes but the merchant struggled on and tbh I wasn't sure that I actually had sunk her until I checked the log and saw that it was listed there and on the nav map there was a red sunk ship icon near where I saw it last.

How far away can I go and still get credit?

I'm not sure but I guess it's 16 km if you're playing with a 16 km environment.

I think I'm at the default setting, I haven't changed anything unless installing GWX and Commander automatically changes it. So that's 8km?

It's true far as I know. Many ships didn't sink in days. In but the ships found down mainly by flooding so needs to push to destroy by torp or gunning, if not it's very possible you don't get a sink (because you didn't sink it).
