Default "Realistic"/immersive game as commander - SH5 good platform?

Hello,

I was out of the SH series (or subsiming in general) for a few years.
Last time i played little modded SH3 and vanila SH4.

I know that for many people is important mainly the "realism" of attack - manual targeting, authentic TDC etc.
I no longer have the need for that. I would like to get as close as possible to the role of submarine captain.

1. I want to feel like I'm not alone on the submarine. So I want to make the most of the ship's crew. Including targeting, deck gun etc.
2. immersive experience....graphic, sound effects, defects, dangerous AI, "realistic" damage model.
3. some crew management to have a relationship with them

So I just want to play as a captain. Give orders, make decisions, experience hard times.
Is SH5(TWOS) good platform for this? I'm thinking about SH5 because it's the latest SH game.
Or there is some other option?

Thanks for any advice. And sorry for my english.
Jan

On a U-boat, the skipper did more of the “targeting”. Very different than the US boats. While overtaking a target, it was usually him providing the bearings and estimated ranges to the navigator, who would plot on millimeter paper. Or it was him who was providing the maneuver orders to try and match course and speed of the target to get the data. And it was only him who looked through the periscope moments before the shot to double check all the data. At most, maybe one or two people helped him, a navigator to do plotting at the option of the skipper, and the first watch officer who did all the shooting on the surface (with commander supervision).

At Mürwik (academy), Skippers performed no less than over 100 torpedo approaches estimating data before they could even shoot live torpedoes, so this is something that skippers were trained in because they were the ones who were responsible for it and did it at the front.

1. It's up to you how much of actual calculations/targeting you leave to the crew, it's fully possible to make them do most of the work with deck gun, targeting, even with calculating boat position with Real Navigation (they will make errors in all of these tasks though).
2. With TWoS, SH5 can be very immersive. Hell, I spent a good deal of time just sitting in my small cabin and writing in ship's log while listening to news and music on the radio. Totally feeling like being there. As for damage model, it seems more unforgiving in TWoS than what I remember from old SH3, the boat feels really fragile.
3. Ups and downs - there's more of a relationship with crew than in other SH games, even some RPG elements thrown in the mix - officers have stories, personality, etc. On the downside, crewmembers can't die and only few officers/specialists do have dialogue and personalities, rest of the crew are just statists. If you want to treat your officers like RPG party members, watching them "grow" and all, then it's good, if you are more into "crew manager" type of gameplay than SH3/4 system is better.

I can say with confidence that SH5 TWOS will undoubtedly help you in this matter.

You would probably enjoy UBOAT more than SH5. UBOAT is more of a RPG from my understanding as you tend to your shipmates more than the boat, unless your in the periscope about to ruin someone's day.

UBOAT is still a work in progress though but it has a lot of potential. Pick it up on sale when you get the chance. Its quite affordable when it is.
