Default New to sub sims, some advice

Hi All,

This is my first foray into the world of sub sims and am looking for some advice on how to best spend my hard earned cash. A friend of mine picked up a copy of Silent Hunter 5 and this has spurred my interest. After reading quite a lot of info online about this game- its bugs, the DRM and so on, I'm not sure this version of the game will be best for me- I live in an area where internet connections are dodgy at best, and the fact that I have to be online to even play the single player campaign is frankly beyond belief- and ultimately excludes me from being able to play SH5. I have read many positive comments about Silent Hunter 3 in particular.
My question is, which version do you old seadogs recommend? I see also several expansion packs for some of the older versions, some clarification of what's what here would also help me.
Thanks in advance!

Ahoy and welcome!

Yeah, as it stands right now, if your connection is dodgy, SH5 is going to be problematic because of the DRM.

SH3 is probably your best bet if you want something similar to SH5 in that you would still be simming in a WWII era German u-boat. Given all the mods and supermods available, it's pretty much a no-brainer and highly recommended. Also can be had at a bargain price these days, fully patched and with no DRM if you're buying a new copy.

SH4 is a sim for WWII era US subs in the Pacific theater, but there is an add-on pack that lets you play in a German u-boat. There are also mods available for it. I haven't played it (yet) so don't know as much about it but as Jimbuna said, you'll find lots of info in the forums dedicated to each game and its mods.

Happy hunting!
