The book "Run Silent-Run Deep" was a favorite read for me. It was made into a movie. WWII era.

Default Iain Ballantyne, Hunter Killers

Iain Ballantyne's Hunter Killers: The Dramatic Untold Story of the Royal Navy's Most Secret Service tells the story of the Royal Navy SSN/SSK subs after WW2.

It's extremely well researched and gives great insight into actual life on board. It's not just theory - in fact, a lot of the book is based on interviews with actual British sub captains.

On a scale of 1 to 5, I would give it 5 for content and research. It's extremely interesting.

Style-wise, I don't know, it's a bit strange as it sometimes verges on too colloquial for me, so I'd give it 3 out of 5. The reason I find this strange is that I have just finished reading his earlier book on the hunt for the Bismarck and it's as if it was written by a different person.

But in spite of this flaw, Hunter Killers is one of the best books on this subject I've read.

Default WWII

"The Bravest Man" by William Touhy is a biography of Dick O'Kane but mentions some of the exploits of other American captains in the Pacific. Pretty interesting.
