Hello.

Some background: I bought Silent Hunter 3 from some Steam sale about 2 years ago. Playtime was about 12 minutes until about three weeks ago. From there I have accumulated about 82 hours of playtime. I'm a big fan of subs, they're like space ships, but underwater. And it is the technical aspect that rules, you need more brains then brawn.

The Game

I'm using GWX and OLC gui on some other mods for smaller tweaking (about the same as Youtuber Frontier359 in his videos). Modscene on SH3 is just amazing, a huge thank you for all parties involved. The mods truly expand every aspect of the game.

It took some 60+ hours to really get the hang of the game, but it has been very rewarding. This game with mods really delivers the essence of Das Boot.

I'm currently playing long campaing and I'm on my 4th patrol sometime in December 1939 and somewhere between Ireland and Fär-islands I spotted a 2 juicy freighters escorted by a destroyer. Ok, to the map calculating and guestimating distances and courses and planning the ambush. This is one of the greatest portions of the game. Just drawing directions on the map. Just planning.

Having completed 3 succesfull patrols I thought myself already an ace () after succesful torpedoing of unarmed merchants. The end result was that I only managed to torpedo one Empire-style freighter and missed the destroyer and the other merchant. It was a feeling of great horror when I observed from periscope that destroyer was turning and it was my turn to be the hunted. Since then, I have been guessing destroyers location, running away, been depthcharged and pinged.

Even in my own failure this game manages to deliver. The experience is something awesome. One is only relying on the weak technology of the 1930s trying to make educated guesses in an old iron coffin. I like everything in this game, from watching MY boat hit waves while music is playing to planning The Hunt, calculating firing solution to evading escorts. This game is Das Boot the Game (which I argue is on target on technical detail, even if the story is fake).

And for last, I wanna thank this forum for mods made because of the passion, not money and instructing new Kaleuns how to play.

How the playing feels:

Default Welcome

SH3 is an awesome game for its time, especially with mods. Now...when ready...SH5 with mods is even better because of the graphics. You now have something to look forward to.

The only thing I hated about 5 at the start was the need to be online, but they fixed that. UPlay lets you play offline, single, like SH3 but you have to set UPlay that way.

Happy Hunting!

So you're saying that gameplay in SH5 is on par? I have the impression that people prefer gameplay of SH3. Is something like OLC Gold MkII -style gui available?

Finally managed to evade that destroyer and surfaced. Took about 4 hours irl. Most awesome gameplay 'till date. Almost could smell the fresh sea air in real life. Now I'm going to charge batteries, reload torpedoes and find them again.
