Default Do Not Cavitate!

Hey, all!

FPSchazly here again with the next installment in my experiment series.

Today, I am here to tell you to never ever cavitate in Dangerous Waters (unless of course, you are evading a torpedo)! I have found that the Akula-III will track a 688(I) moving at flank speed to about 17 miles with the Pelamida towed array. If that same 688(I) is cavitating, however, that range increases to about 31! That is almost a doubling in maximum detection range and almost four times the increase in the 688(I)'s sound propagation circle, i.e., if the 688(I) was to be heard over 10 square nmi without cavitating, it will be heard over 40 square nmi with cavitating. Check out the video below by clicking on the picture for more on this increase in sound due to cavitating and an explanation of cavitation!

My fault! Clicking on the picture should take you to the video, it's not directly listed in the post. I edited the original post accordingly.

If you've embedded a link in that image, it isn't working for me. Google managed to find your video though,

Another interesting video - thanks for making this.

I saw your Lada video too - interesting you say to not have tubes flooded and equalized because of the increased noise.

Cheers!

That's very interesting. I'm glad you still managed to find it, I edited the OP and put the raw link up there, too, in case others can't click the image.

Glad you liked it!

Yes! I found it very interesting, too. It makes no sense but that is what we were seeing haha. I was in a Gepard and my friend a Seawolf and he was stalking up close to me. I couldn't see him one second and then he flooded and equalized, but did not open the doors, and I could see him. Very odd! And this was sustained, they weren't just transients.

I guess it becomes a tactical decision too - I've done missions where I've set up a counter-detection trigger. I've snuck up close(ish) to another sub - as soon as I flooded tubes, the counter-detection trigger fired!

Changing depth and messing with the length of the TA has also set off the counter-detection trigger!

That can make life 'interesting' if you're chasing a Kilo and you're within Shkval range!
