Default Round Antenna

I'm just curious, and cant seem to find a reference to it.
Both the u-boats and the US boats appear to have a round looking hoop on their decks. I assume its an antenna, but it a hoop.

What is that? Whats it used for?

HF Radio Direction Finder loop for getting general directions towards the broadcasting ship.

We had one on the first cutter I was assigned to probably because it was built in the 60's. And it used a 3"50 mount up front that was dated to pre-WW2 years!
