Footage taken in April of this year 2022, of what's left of the once beautiful city of Palmyra.

Looted and then sacked by the stupid Roman Emperor Aurelian. He should've accepted the status quo that the empire had broken up to separate kingdoms, but no, he had to smash all his rivals and reunite the empire.

Palmyra was a huge, beautiful city of about a million people. Thriving metropolis with good government, and was a bulwark against the aggressive Sassanid Persians to their east....funny thing though...when Palmyra was attacked by Aurelian the Persians sent 2 armies to help Palmyra even though they'd fought each other in the recent past.

Palmyra became a mediocre trading/caravan stop, and a quarry for building materials.

Isis destroyed a lot of what was left, for sheer bloodymindedness, decapitating archaeologists, enslaving locals, blowing up temples, palaces, etc.

A sad history. Palmyra's heyday was in the 270 AD's and must've been a glorious place to visit.

There's a lot of mileage in quizshow comedy. Benny Hill, Morecombe and Wise, The Two Ronnies, etc, etc. All great stuff.

The Palmyra video was great to see, what a city this must have been.
Romans breaking treaties, well i guess also the phoenicians had already met their fate when they signed them.

Thanks Kai. History's full of tragic stories....the human element plays a major part. Dry old Histories, Research papers, etc, are all very good, but a good Historical novel really puts "flesh on the bones" so to speak and brings the period to life.

In that regard with reference to Palmyra I highly recommend.....

"Zenobia, or the Fall of Palmyra" by William Ware. It's an old book ( 1838 ) , so the language is very Victorian and difficult to "get into" to start with, but once you get used to the archaic phraseology it's a great read. There's definitely a "movie in it".....that probably will never be made.
