You might ask at j-aircraft (they have a naval forum).

Questions been asked.

But these blue prints while around are not always in public hands. The I400 blueprint was returned from US archives. I suspect the archives from the industrial companies that built the subs will have plans. But don't hold your breath expecting to get anything from them.

Have already been down that road & been in contact with Lindberg-Hawk's owner, Ernie Petit. He advised only that they obtained most of their reference material from USN sources but that's as specific as it gets. Based on they're having to make last minute changes to their tooling - release is postponed another two months - I wouldn't be surprised if they cobbled it together from photos & whatever they could get their hands on. No wonder there aren't any aftermarket guys interested in turning out kits for these beasts.

I tend to agree that their should be drawings available if they haven't been passed back from the National Archives.

Totally forgot about J-aircraft & will spend some time tonight doing some digging.

Thanks gentlemen!

Chuck

Default I-178

IJN Kaidai type 7 submarine :

26 December 1942:
The I-178 is completed at Mitsubishi's Kobe Yard, commissioned in the IJN and based in the Sasebo Naval District. Cdr Utsuki Hidejiro (former CO of I-5) is the Commanding Officer.

The I-178 is assigned to the Kure SubRon with the I-177, RO-106 and the RO-107.

Developed from the KD6 type, these attack submarines had an endurance of 75 days. Differences from the earlier type include concentration of all tubes forward, and slightly improved operating depth. The most notable naval successes by this class were both achieved by I-176. I-176 damaged cruiser USS Chester off Guadalcanal on 2 October 1942, preventing her from participating in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the First Battle of Guadalcanal. That boat also sank USS Corvina patrolling off of Truk on 16 November 1943. Polmar and Carpenter state that was the only instance of a Japanese submarine sinking a US submarine.

Seven of these boats were sunk within one year after commissioning, and all ten of these boats were lost by October, 1944. I-176, I-177, I-180, I-181, and I-185 were all sunk by American Destroyers in 1944, while I-182 had a similar fate a year earlier. Also in 1943, I-178 became one of very few submarines sunk by a submarine chaser, and I-179 was lost when a hatch was left open during a training dive, less than a month after completion. I-183 was sunk by USS Pogy (SS266) in home waters in April, 1944. I-184 was sunk by depth bombs dropped by an aircraft from USS Suwanee on 19 June 1944. These boats were originally numbered I-76, I-77, etc. They were renumbered in 1942.

The side and top view I usually found here on the web, the cross-section views I never had before !
Thanks to Rubenandthejets who provided me with a few books, including the one these two blueprints come from :

Ships of the World 1963, 2, n°66, pp. 76-77.
