Default Not enjoying it

I bought Silent Hunter 5 a few days ago since I read that the tWoS mod fixed and added a lot to the vanilla game.

But still it has many glitches and bugs and feels quite sluggish.
I am enjoying the graphics and sound effects and moving around in the sub is quite immersive and fun. But it also reveals some glitches.

One graphical glitch that annoys me is seeing black smoke dots on the ocean that suddenly appears and re-appears. Anyone knows how to fix this?

I don't know why, but I am just not enjoying it. SH3 and 4 was more fun. Maybe they balanced the game vs realism better? Not sure.

I am also wondering is there any third party mods that I should get that is compatible with the tWoS mod to make the game more fun / better?

You can configure the game to your taste, if you start the Option File Editor Viewer, for example you can chose the SH3 UI and dials. Be sure to start the game in Admin mode by setting it in the game shortcut.

To correct possible grafic glitches, set your Nvidia Control Panel (or equivalent AMD) > Scaling Options > Fullscreen. If still it doesn't help, then set the scaling options to GPU instead of Display, that should help.

Be sure to read the TWOS notes & tips in the documentation, TWOS is set to realistic play without Real Navigation by default, but you don't have to play it at high realism, again you can set this in the OFEV mentioned above. For example, you can play with Auto-TDC which is much easier. For that, disable Manual TDC in the in-game options, open the OFEV (read the doc about how to use the OFEV), go in the XO TDC tab and disable the last option (disable manual TDC).

In the sticky posts here, THEBERBSTER has some very useful in-depth guides that you want to check, e.g. how to fire your torpedos, how to navigate and find targets with instruments etc., plus there are useful tutorial videos about TWOS.

Third-Party mods: NOT advisable to use with TWOS because most of them are not compatible with it. And then: what do you want to change, you don't even know TWOS yet? You can do most changes in the OFEV or in the in-game options. Besides, TWOS comes already with optional mods that you can load via JSGME.
Exceptions: German language patch or those mods which EXPRESSLY mention that they are compatible with TWOS.

TC:

In TWoS you should be safe with TC because it will stop when important things happen, like radio messages or enemies comming in sight. With a ship in sight you cannot go higher than x64, TWoS will not allow it for stability reasons. And similar limits in other situations, so it's not a bug, it's intended.

However, if your sub gets damaged and you are underwater, don't use TC higher than x16, that's because your sub will get more damaged, and it will 'magically' be detected by the escorts. x16 should be fine, higher TC could show this weird behavior.

Game tips and reference docs:
TWoS has an included 'Gametips' PDF. I adivce you to read it at least once, and then use it with the 'Search' function every time something is not clear to you about how to use the game.

Good hunting,
