Those are supposed to be 109s. Are you sure they aren't chasing the Hurricanes?

Hmm. It would appear that for once you're right. I have no idea why they would use those aircraft and not the Spitfires, but it seems they actually did.

Forty-five years of watching the movie, and I never noticed that.

I know. It would have saved both of us a lot of time

Tell me about it. Great movie, though. None of the 'Americans good, Germans evil' stuff you get in most movies.

While we're on the topic of Messerschmitt substitutions, what did they use in The Longest Day? It looked like a civilian Me-108 to me...

They didn't have a real one, and I guess no-one thought to just use an American sub, which while inaccurate would have looked a lot better than a room with some props stuck in.

It is. The Bf-108 was also used as a military trainer. Hey, at least it's a Messerschmitt.

They didn't need a real one. Just build a set that resembles the inside of a u-boat.

re: "The Cruel Sea", I just happened to read the novel for the first time a month ago. It was a real page turner, I could not put it down and read the whole thing in about a week. It is a classic, easily the best novel I ever read about the Allied side of the Battle of the Atlantic. Highly recommended.

On the movie, you have to remember it was made in the early 50s, so no CGI. The producers had a hard time even getting hold of a Corvette. The choice was either using a real RN sub or using models.

Ah, the good old days of stock footage and miniatures
