Default What is Fall of the Rising Sun exactly?

At first glance it looks like the same game. I am kind of confused about this one.

To be fair I do not have much experience in this game so I might be missing something.

How does the mod stands between realism and gameplay?

The first five posts of the thread Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate - Full Release are all about the mod. The #2 Post "What Happens When I Push This Button?..." specifically mentions what is attempted with the mod

So much for using the scroll wheel... Too bad you guys don't have a facepalm emote because I deserve one.

In any case, the mod kept crashing when I tried to go on the bridge at Pearl Harbor. I love doing that when I leave a port but as soon as I try. Mod crashes.

Ended up uninstalling it and using Trigger Maru Overhauled instead.

I thought there was a facepalm Kaleun thingie, but alas, there isn't. There is a brickwall one like this: - for what that's worth...

There are several things that can cause you issues (get ready with that facepalm again). Number one is a failure to empty the old Save data from the "C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH4" or similar folder. "UserName" in this case is what you use to log into the computer. "Documents" might be any name that Windows uses with a particular version of their OS, and might be "My Documents". "SH4" is "SH4" unless you are using MultiSH4, which is highly recommended if using more than one copy of the game for multiple mods. The game mostly runs off of that Save folder, and if when you activate a mod, JSGME finds a file of the same name in there, it does NOT overwrite it, resulting in a partial activation, which generally spells trouble the first time you go outside...

Number two on the list is installing the Silent Hunter game in a "Program Files" folder of one form or another. "Modern" versions of Windows (after Vista) use more and more intrusive methods of "protecting" the computer from the user. If you attempt to alter anything in a "Program Files" folder via a means not authorized by Windows (JSGME and SH4 are both too old to know what Windows Vista or later is), then Windows will protect the user from themself and roll the changes back, especially to any cfg files, which mods are full of. Most graphics files are left. So you might think you have a mod activated, but you actually have a cantankerous cross-breed that is neither Stock nor modded, but ready to crash on you.

A third method of crashing when going to the bridge is due to a failure to properly activate a memory manager on the SH4.exe file. The FotRSU mod includes two versions of LAA inside the Extras folder in v1.001g. One uses netFramework, the other does not and uses plain Windows library files to build its interface. Part of an improper activation of a memory manager can occur when a player attempts to activate it on a write-protected SH4.exe file. There are no "error" routines in the little apps, so all looks well, but isn't.

All of these points and more can be found by using the "01_FotRSU_TableOfContents.pdf" file in the Support folder, or the "01_FotRSU_Support_TOC.bat" file in the mod's root folder, which would put it in the game's root folder after mod activation. If you know how to use hyperlinks, you can keep the TOC pdf open, while browsing through the listed files in-turn (right-click the links if you have to).

TMO is not near the size of FotRSU, and does not use as much RAM. That might be the difference, in that you don't need the LAA or some other memory utility with TMO, but you do with FotRSU. However, if you do have the game in C:\Program Files (x86) \Ubisoft \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific", which is the default installation location, then your TMO is most likely not wholly activated either...
