Default What is the key to surrender?

I keep trying to understand and make this game work, I don't give up, I couldn't do it even if I wanted to because I looked for the surrender key and I can't find it. Standing applause for the folks at GWX who made SH3 so much better, and thank you for your time and dedication! With all due respect, my comments are geared towards the essence of the game itself, which in my humble opinion leaves many, many loose ends. I have never been in a real submarine in my life, but with my 70 years of age I have seen all the films of the genre, referring to the Second World War, and I have read innumerable books about submarine warfare, both from the point of view German as that of the Allies. At the beginning of the war, in 1939 and 1940 many merchant ships sailed alone and without any escort, so much so that in addition to submarines, warships and surface corsairs of the Kriegsmarine, numerous victories were scored. So calm were the waters, absent from those damned destroyers and armed fishing boats, that in the proximity of a merchant ship the submarines would emerge and detain it, asking them to display their cargo manifests. Then they decided whether to sink it or not, sometimes with cannon fire so as not to waste torpedoes. Much later and as the action of the gray wolves was decimating the allied merchant marine, the convoy system was created. Only a few escort ships - the least - had radar and sonar equipment and these were still imperfect and had their performance limitations. A mission entitled "Happy times" already presents in April 1940, English ships organized in convoys and with escort ships. I was able to sink three merchant ships despite the dogged pursuit of a seedy sonar-equipped fishing boat in 1940? hahaha, anyway. After several hours of playing cat and mouse, and using time compression so as not to send everything to hell, the annoying blowfly finally left. At the beginning of 1942, the North American merchants left the port sailing alone and with all their lights on! This lasted several months until they managed to organize convoys given the tremendous losses suffered by the US merchant marine. If only Doenitz had more Type IX Uboats in the area, I don't know what could have happened. But the mission "Bucket Brigade" in April 1942, already presents in Cape Hatteras a huge convoy with escort ships and air support. ???? I couldn't even get close to that convoy at firing range, which already had three escort ships and a Catalina seaplane on top of me. The depth under the keel was only 15 meters! The screams of my complaining crew members began, everything began to break down, I could not dive any further, I looked for the key to launch oil, making the enemy believe that I was sinking, but I did not find it, as well as the one that would allow me to throw vests through the torpedo tube. lifeguards and other things, to see if the escorts believed the story. If I surfaced, they erased me from the map, so I looked for the key to let them know that I was giving up but I couldn't find it either. What else could I do? Well, get out of the game, take a deep breath, and have a beer. Greetings! Postscript: If anyone knows of any missions for SH3 where only lone merchants navigate, would you be so kind as to let me know? Thank you!

There is not surrender key.

There is not surrender.

Fight to the last shot.

And be more aggressive!

(jokes apart, i have no idea about a surrender key, sorry for this)
Best regards, Vd

From the readme for Stiebler Patch ;

Surrender/Abandon Option
The option of ‘surrender’ of the U-boat when conditions are sufficiently severe. This was a feature of
the old Aces of the Deep, which gave a small chance of being rescued by U-boat and returned to
active service. SH3 lacks this feature, and other players in the past have requested the option as a
mod. Currently, whenever the U-boat is sunk in SH3, all the crew are killed, and players who play
‘Dead-Is-Dead’ might as well remain submerged and take their chances when a real crew would
certainly surface in order to try to save their lives. So it is desirable to introduce this feature, partly to
encourage the ‘Dead-Is-Dead’ players to surface in the hope of being ‘rescued by another U-boat’,
and partly to save some or all of the crew.
Stiebler4 Documentation Page 2
There are other reasons why you might want to abandon your U-boat; for example, after running out
of fuel in mid-Atlantic, or after severe damage by an aircraft which has then flown off. The U-boat
might have become unmanoeuvrable!
PROCEDURE:
1. You must signal the intention of abandoning your U-boat. This is done by clicking on the new red
‘Abandon U-boat’ radio button (made specially for this mod by SquareSteelBar, this button was
formerly the unwanted ‘Report Contacts’ button, NOT to be confused with the ‘Send Contact Report’
radio button.) Once clicked, this action CANNOT BE UNDONE! (except by saving the game and
reloading.) The button can be clicked on the surface or underwater.
2. You then send a radio status message to BdU. This can be done only on the surface, you must rise
to the surface if submerged. This radio message has the following effects:
a) It announces to BdU that you are abandoning the U-boat (check the message).
b) It starts a self-destruction bomb with a timer of just 10 minutes! You will get a dialog box on
screen to remind you of what you have just done.
c) After you have sent your status message to BdU, you must ‘Abandon ship’. In order to mimic this,
you go to high speed and press ‘Dive’, so that the U-boat sinks to destruction.
d) After 10 minutes, the bomb will “explode” (there is no visual effect), setting your hull integrity to
just 2.0. This hull integrity will not survive even at periscope depth, so there is no problem in selfdestruction
even in shallow waters.
After the U-boat has sunk, you will get the usual ‘Black Screen of Death’ (BSD). However, instead of
the usual case that all your crew have been killed, only a random number will have been killed, and
the remainder rescued.
You will also be told whether you have been rescued by the Allies or by another U-boat. If you have
been rescued by U-boat, you may legitimately start a new career, to begin after the date you were
sunk at sea, even for the Dead-Is-Dead players. This is completely realistic; there are several real-life
examples of U-boat crews being rescued by U-boat and returned to active service in new U-boats.
However, if you have been rescued by the Allies, you may not start a new career. Your career is over.
The probability that you will be rescued by U-boat depends directly on your hull integrity at the time
you sent your radio status report to BdU. Therefore, as commander, you must make a difficult
decision about when to surface a damaged boat under attack, and when to stay deep in an attempt to
get away.
If, after sending your ‘Abandon U-boat’ message, the enemy then sinks you, even on the surface, your
crew will NOT be rescued. You will get the usual message “U-boat destroyed.” on the ‘Black Screen
of Death’. This should be taken to mean that your U-boat exploded, or sank suddenly, after being hit
by shells or bombs from ships or aircraft. In order to survive, you *must* sink the U-boat yourself!
For Dead-Is-Dead players: your career has ended after the “U-boat destroyed.” message. No new
career is permitted.
LIMITATIONS:
1. A limitation of SH3 is that radio messages will not be acknowledged unless you space them by at
least two hours. Thus, if you have recently sent a radio message, your emergency abandon message
may not be sent.
2. After you are sunk, I would advise very strongly that you close SH3, then restart it in order to reset
some internal variables. You will probably want a pause to think anyway.
3. Alternatively, if you choose to restart from an earlier saved game (because you don’t like to be
Stiebler4 Documentation Page 3
sunk), send a radio status message as soon as you can, even if you have no hull damage. This will
reinstate changed variables.
4. After you have closed the ‘Black Screen of Death’, you will see another screen ‘Career Summary’,
which shows that all your crew are dead. It would take too much effort and spare bytes in the program
code to change this - ignore it.

Hope this helps.

Good hunting,
FUBAR295

Default ¿Kapitulieren? Nein!

Dear friend: Surrender is not the only key missing from this game, but a few more. Fighting until the last round was a motto of Uncle Adolfo (Hitler), but it doesn't convince me, hahaha, as we say in my land "soldier who flees is used for another war" hahaha. Nice passenger ships, but those I would be very sorry to send to the bottom! Cheers!

Default Thank you for your reply!

I can't get rid of that habit of mine to analyze things, see how they work and find the weak points! hahaha The truth is that this game leaves quite a few loose ends, some have already been solved by enthusiasts who provide mods, others will still have to wait. The surrender thing can be discussed, but the oil stain in the water, and the trick of the objects thrown by the torpedo tube we need it now! It is enough that the enemy ships swallow the hook! Cheers!

In addition to the Stiebler patch mentioned there is a surrender function in SH3 Commander.
