Easiest position for starting out

Ahoy all! So what in your opinion would be the easiest position to start in. I'd like to start in the multiplayer soon, but don't want to be the cause of any major disasters.

I've been learning how to handle the diving officers role. Not too bad, but I don't see any definition of how deep 'periscope depth' is, nor 'decks awash' if anyone knows these.

I wish they had an 'observers' roll, who doesn't do anything, but can walk around and watch what other people do. Maybe make him 'ghost-like' so he doesn't get in the way.

I've watched all the videos I can find and guides I can read, and am getting the itch to jump into a real MP game.
