Can we all get together and get a nice list of Navy Movies. If you would like to write a little review or rate it feel free, but dont forget some of us may not have seen the Movie, so no spoilers please. There have been many a great navy movies out there, so list whatever you can. Thanks for your contributions.

I will start with:
The Enemy Below with Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens(1957)- A must see, great action

In Harms Way (1965) - Nuff Said

They Were Expendable (1945) - If you like PT boats you will love this picture.

The Bedford Incident. (196x) Looks a lot like the Cuban Missle Crisis incident with the Russian subs (See book October Fury)



...speaking of strawberries. I interviewed a WW2 navy vet, he and a cohort stole some officers strawberries and got caught. The cohort was a very popular guy on the DE, so they got away with it. (He looked a lot like Bud Abbott) I have to try and find my interview. but that was 15 years ago.

Battle of the River Plate - I ordered the dvd, but it came in the wrong region code so I cant watch it. Would like to see it though. If anyone wants it that can watch that region code let me know. Will have to wait till I go to other state to pick it up though.

A great documentary-style retelling of attack on Pearl Harbor.

Mister Roberts (1955)- The classic scene of Doug and Doc creating scotch for Ensign Pulver's date is a hoot! And an ending that will stay with you for a long time.

Hellcats of the Navy (1957) A submarine B movie starring Ronald Reagan and his future wife, Nancy Davis. This was their only movie together.

Torpedo Run (1958) Pretty good submarine flick starring Glenn Ford as Lt. Cmdr. Barney Doyle pursuing his 'white whale', the aircraft carrier Shinaru. Ernest Borgnine also stars.

Here Comes the Navy (1934) starring James Cagney and a young Gloria Stuart (nominated Best Supporting Actress, Titanic, 1997) But the real star is the ship where priniciple photography was made, the USS Arizona!

What is your region? Also, you can buy 'code-free' players. Third, put it in your computer; most PCs are set to change regions (but only a couple of times, so be sure to save it to your hard drive).

Also, why has no-one mentioned Das Boot yet?:rotfl:

My offers:

PT-109 (1963): not a great movie, but a good story, and more PT boats.

Corvette K-225 (1943): A really fun movie about escorting convoys. Unfortunately still not on DVD or video, but is shown on cable channels from time to time.

The Sea Chase (1955): Not such a good movie, but it has John Wayne as a GERMAN WW2 merchant captain, trying to get his crew home so they can make their own decision about whether to join up or not.

The Cruel Sea (1953): More with the escorts. Haven't seen it, but I've read the book; and people say it's a good one.

U-Boote Westwarts (1941): German u-boat movie, made during the war, and filmed on a real u-boat. Karl Doenitz plays himself. Melodromatic rah-rah propaganda, but no worse than American or British movies from the same era. Not available, but links have been posted to it on YouTube. I'm sorry I couldn't find it there; still looking.

I was fortunate enough to find a copy of U-boote Westwärts on VHS around 1997 or 1998. What I need to transfer it to DVD. :hmm:

Operation Petticoat - (1959) Carry Grant, A must see for comedy on board a sub, the first time you will see a pink sub also.

You're in the Navy Now (1951) - Garry Cooper, Great movie about a ship that has experimental steam propulsion. Twas a great picture and is on my list of must see. Don't know why I liked it so much.......:hmm:.......ooooh..<looks at name>..Because Steam and Pasta Sauce run through these veins!!

Transfering VHS to DVD
VHS tapes aren't the best choice for archiving your memories. They're easily broken, wear out, deliver fuzzy picture quality and can melt in heat. Worse, they're bulky, so they require considerable storage space. Besides having a more reliable medium for your memories, there are creative perks to transferring from VHS to DVD. You can:

• Edit for content (cut unnecessary footage, condense or insert scenes).
• Determine where scenes begin and end, allowing you to jump to scenes on playback.
• Add opening and closing credits.
• Add narration, music, and other audio effects.
• Add titles or messages to preface scenes.
• Add other screen text to indicate the event, date, location, names, relation, etc.

• HP Digital Entertainment Center or PC
• VCR or analog camcorder (a different procedure is required for digital video formats)
• Composite video/audio cable
• Blank DVD media

I need to proofread my posts thoroughly before posting. What I meant to say above was "What I need to do is transfer it to DVD."

I have a VHS/DVD recorder combo already. Just need to pop in the tape and dub it to DVD.
