Caligae 'Little Boots' it is! Caligula was nick-named for them!

made from dead tanned animal hides worn by men drilling in 8 man 'tent' units by their decanus(sergeant). Jimbuna got warm with boot but it's a sandal... with hobnails. No doubt the Roman legionaries occasionally 'raped and pillaged' w/o removing their
