Default Newbie needing advice

Hello fellow gamers,

I recently purchased SH4 with the uboat expansion on Steam!

I'm fairly compentant at commanding subs. What I'm not is competant at mods!

I've been watching Wolfpack345 and would like to try the TMO mod. However once I downloaded it I can't seem to get it extracted or don't know where to place it.

The readme has a link in it for installation however they don't work anymore.

I'm hoping that someone can help me walk through learning how to mod this game so I can enjoy it like the rest of you all have.

Thanks in advance

Michael

First of all, to apply mods, you should have the game installed in a Steam Library folder that is NOT inside of a Windows Program Files folder (generally "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific"). Refer to Moving a Steam Installation and Games on the Steam Support site for more info. If the game is installed in the "default" path, Windows will prevent you from activating mods. If you only have Silent Hunter installed, it is sometimes easier to re-install all of Steam and the game to a different directory of your own creation, such as a "C:\Games \Steam \etc..."

Second, you'll want to use JSGME (JoneSoft Generic Mod Enabler) to activate any mods. You can "install" it anywhere, but it is easiest if you put the 7zip file in the game folder, such as "C:\Games \Steam \SteamApps \common \Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific \jsgme_setup.7z" and extract and use it from there.

You can use 7-zip to extract the zip archive file, or some version of Windows have an extractor app that will open if you double-click a zip archive file. If you have a 7z archive, such as the jsgme_setup.7z linked to above, you'll need to use 7-zip on those.

So use 7-zip to extract JSGME, then run the JSGME.exe file, which if you have put it in the game folder will ask you if you want to create a "MODS" folder there, which you do. Download or put TMO in there. TMO should also come as a 7-zip file. Use 7-zip to extract it inside that MODS folder, and then use JSGME to activate it. You should see "TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5" in the left-hand side of the JSGME window, so just click the right-facing arrow ( [ > ] ) button, let it do its thing for a while (several minutes usually anyway, maybe longer, depending upon the computer). Once JSGME "refreshes" its display with "TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5" now in the right-hand window, you should be able to start the SH4.exe file and have TMO activated.

Generally speaking, you are better off the run JSGME's utility "Generate snapshot of game files", which is found on the blue "Tasks ..." link in the middle of the JSGME app. That will give you a good "restore" point in case something goes wrong with your install later. You should also use the "1_TMO_25_small_patch.rar" if TMO is the only mod you want to use. The small patch from aanker "fixes" a couple of issues with the base TMO v2.5 mod. If you use RSRDC, you'll not need that small patch.
