Jodhpur, India: The Prince of Wales passes under a triumphal arch.


Soldiers in traditional armor during the visit of Edward, Prince of Wales, to Jodhpur, a princely state of the British Raj.


Ship Losses:

Angheliki Samathraky (Greece) The cargo ship caught fire in the Black Sea and was beached 12 nautical miles (22 km) east of Varna, Romania.
Industry (United Kingdom) The schooner was wrecked in Nethertown Bay.
June (United Kingdom) The schooner caught fire in the Mediterranean Sea off Port Mahon, Menorca, Spain and was abandoned. Her crew survived.

Ship Losses:

Guvernøren (Norway) The tanker ran aground in 2 nautical miles (3.7 km) off Cape Carysfort, Falkland Islands. She was abandoned as a total loss on 3 December.
Tibet (France) The cargo ship ran aground in the Bosphorus. She was refloated on 4 December.

1st December 1921

U.S. destroyer USS DeLong runs aground at Half Moon Bay, California in heavy fog.


First manned airship filled with helium instead of hydrogen takes flight as a U.S. Navy blimp C-7 makes a journey from Norfolk, Virginia to Washington, D.C. and back.


Ship Losses:

Comer (United Kingdom) The coaster foundered in the Firth of Forth. Her crew were rescued by a tug.
USS DeLong (United States Navy) The Wickes-class destroyer destroyer ran aground in Half Moon Bay, California. She was salvaged, decommissioned, and scrapped.

Flag handover ceremony is conducted with students of the Saint-Cyr military academy in France with General Albert Tanant.


Ship Losses:

Algeria (United Kingdom) The schooner foundered in the Indian Ocean 600 nautical miles (1,100 km) south of Colombo, Ceylon. Her crew were rescued by Texel ( Netherlands).

Canada holds its federal election, with the Liberal party, led by W.L. Mackenzie King, gaining a slim majority of one seat.


Said Halim Pasha (left), the former Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire, is assassinated in Rome by Armenian agent Arshavir Shirakian (right) for his role in the Armenian Genocide.


The Anglo-Irish Treaty is signed by the British and Irish delegates, establishing the Irish Free State as a Dominion of the British Commonwealth of Nations.


Ship Losses:

Aurore (France) The ship foundered in the English Channel off Honfleur, Calvados. Her crew were rescued.
Elwy (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground at Breaksea Point, Glamorgan. She was refloated on 13 December.
Kinsman (United Kingdom) The schooner sprang a leak and was abandoned off Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal. Her crew were rescued by Gil Eanes ( Portugal).
Heimdal (Norway) The mailboat ran aground at Rønne, Bornholm, Denmark. All on board were rescued.

7th December 1921

Ship Losses:

Amy B. Silver (United Kingdom) The schooner was abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean. Her crew were rescued by Sophie Rickmer ( Germany).
Hornsee (United Kingdom) The cargo ship sank in the Mediterranean Sea whilst on a voyage from Syracuse, Sicily, Italy to Alexandria, Egypt. Her crew were rescued. Barratry was suspected to be the cause of her loss.
Ruby W (United Kingdom) The schooner was abandoned and set afire in the Atlantic Ocean 400 nautical miles (740 km) south of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Her crew were rescued.
USS S-48 (United States Navy) The S-class submarine sank off Penfield Reef in Long Island Sound during pre-commissioning builder's trails. All aboard survived by bringing her bow to the surface and escaping via one of her torpedo tubes. She was refloated on 20 December, repaired, and commissioned in 1922.

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to Swedish Prime Minister Hjalmar Branting (left) and Norwegian scholar Christian Lous Lange (right) for their work on internationalism and role in the League of Nations.


Ship Losses:

Celtic II (Norway) The coaster was destroyed by fire at Arendal, Norway. Her crew were rescued.
Drummer's Tax (United Kingdom) The schooner was driven ashore at Bonavista, Newfoundland and was wrecked.

14th December 1921

King George V heads for the opening of Parliament to ratify the Anglo-Irish Treaty that will establish the Irish Free State.


U.S., U.K., France, and Japan sign the Four-Power Treaty at the Washington Naval Conference, agreeing to keep the status quo in the Pacific and to not interfere with the territories of the signatories.


Ship Losses:

Flevo 4 (United Kingdom) The coaster struck submerged wreckaged in the English Channel and foundered 9 nautical miles (17 km) west south west of the Royal Sovereign Lightship ( United Kingdom). Her crew were rescued by Scuttle ( United Kingdom).
Jacov Sverdlov (United Kingdom) The cargo ship came ashore near Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. She was refloated on 17 December.
Kathleen Lily (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground at Helsinki, Finland and was abandoned.
Tarv (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was abandoned in the Irish Sea off Rathlin Island, County Antrim. She drifted ashore and was wrecked. She was declared a total loss on 1 February.

Sir John Nixon, General of the British Indian Army who ordered the disastrous British Expedition against Baghdad in the Great War, has passed away.


A contingent of Japanese marines pay their respects at the French Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe.


Ship Losses:

Silba (United Kingdom) The coaster departed Seaham, County Durham for Lerwick, Shetland Islands. No further trace, presumed foundered in the North Sea with the loss of all hands.

British House of Commons approves the Anglo-Irish Treaty for the establishment of the Irish Free State by a vote of 401 to 58, but the treaty is far more contentious in Ireland. The Irish delegation of the treaty returning to Ireland.


Ship Losses:

Stevenstone (United Kingdom) The cargo ship departed Blyth, Northumberland for Helsingør, Denmark. No further trace presumed foundered with the loss of all hands.
Tsushima Maru (Japan) The cargo liner ran aground in the Hirado Strait. All on board were rescued.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy Edwin Denby inspects the barrels of warship guns under construction. The ongoing Washington Naval Conference is currently discussing limits to the navies of the Great Powers.

The Japanese battleship Tosa is launched in Nagasaki (due to the Washington Naval Treaty, its hull was used as a test target and sunk in 1925)


Ship Losses:

Capella (Germany) The cargo ship foundered in the Baltic Sea. Her crew were rescued by Lenin ( Soviet Union).
Donald J. Cook (United Kingdom) The schooner was abandoned in the Gulf of Mexico. Her crew were rescued by San Eduardo ( United Kingdom).

Inishboffin (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground on Aegna, Estonia. She was abandoned by her crew on 14 December.
Otis (Sweden) The cargo ship came ashore, but was refloated and beached at Hönö, Sweden.
