my guess would be USS Leviathon originally built as Vaterland but commandeered at start of WWI and the subject of a novel: The Great Rescue.

Wiki lists her as a troop ship.

BIG CLUE: The title of the fictional book is the name of the ship.

After doing some research on the matter it seems that the US and England have captured all german civilian vessels from WW1 to 1939 .. i had already heard that Albert Ballin, german ship owner of the HAPAG and Lloyd had committed suicide after his big, fast passenger liners were all commandeered (does one say so?) to the Entente, and later just confiscated in the harbours they happened to be.
Still, i have no clue about this special one

Afraid not.

This vessel was US built.

CLUE: East coast in one of the largest populated cities.

Was this book ever made into a movie?
