Default USS CISCO SS-290 Third Patrol Screenshots (Part I)

AIKOKU MARU Class Auxiliary Cruiser sinking. Fired four MK 18. Target was making 18 knots. One MK 18 torpedo hit the stern, knocking out the prop and starting a fire. The fire burned on and off over a hour while the vessel flooding by the stern and eventually sunk. I had TheDarkWraith's fire damage mod enabled, pretty cool.

AIKOKU MARU Class Auxiliary Cruiser 14280 tons

Bow of AIKOKU MARU Class Auxiliary Cruiser protruding.

1600 ton tankers burning after four MK 14 hits. Tanker was in center of convoy and as tankers are priority targets...fire four to ensure the kill.

Escorting DD of the Auxiliary Cruiser.

KANAGA MARU with two large holes sinking with crew in lifeboat.

Torpedo Attack No.7 (final torpedo attack of patrol) Sunk a 5100 ton tanker in night surface attack. Blew up nicely. Range from target is about 3300 yards. Tanker was in center column. Fired from outside about 2000 yards off starboard column.

Torpedo Attack No7. Night surface attack. Fired from 2000 yards off starboard column at tanker in center. Took a lot of gunfire after torpedoes hit, but no hits, managed to get away with escorts pursuing.

Loaded tankers blow up nicely. With EAX sound enabled, really a neat experience.

Auxiliary Cruier's prop knocked off by MK 18 torpedo.(Torpedo Attack No.1)

12.5 miles West of Angaur Island, Palau.

Verification:

Observed torpedo hit target in stern as target
zigged to starboard away from two other torpedoes. Hit caused massive explosion,
followed by two larger secondary explosions. This is likely as a result of
hit on aft torpedo room, igniting torpedoes. Submarine burned profusely and sunk
in 43 seconds.

ANTI-SUBMARINE COUNTERMEASURES AND EVASION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Enemy ASW was much improved over previous encounters,
with apparent improved sound equipment and depth charges.

Depth Charge Attack No.1
--------------------------------------------
1944-03-23

After Torpedo Attack No.1, the
escorting Momi Class Destroyer (now a DE) conducted a aggressive
and persistent attack, headed by a skilled Captain and crew.

Almost immediately after torpedo impact revealed CISCO's presence,
the escort pinged and located CISCO, rushing in. This prevented CISCO
from obtaining desired deep submerged prior to first salvo of depth charges,
forcing her to endure the barrage at "shallow" depth of 350 ft.

Attack continued for several hours, with CISCO reaching depth of 675 ft in order
to escape. Enemy remained in area throughout the day, with air patrols assisting. This
prevented CISCO operating in area as planned.

Depth Charge tally for this attack: 105

Evasion was fairly standard for CISCO was depth, course, speed changes,
and "bursts" of speed when enemy was above or nearby conducting depth charge run.
Depth of 675 ft in this instance seemed to cause enemy to lose sonar contact.

Enemy vessels are absolutely believed to now be equipped with
a more advanced and powerful depth charge.

Depth Charge Attack No.2
-----------------------------------
1944-03-30

Two contacts tracking east of Palau turned out to be a patrol of one DD and one
Subchaser. As APR-1 did not detect enemy radar signals during entire approach, it is believed enemy
had radar set switched off. Low visibility due to clouds and fog at night
prevented timely visual identification.

When Cisco was at 4500 yards roughly from lead vessel, APR-1 detected radar emissions
from the contacts bearing. Suddenly, gunfire erupted with shell splashes landing close
to CISCO. This prompted a quick dive to avoid.

Enemy pinging and attack began soon after. As a dedicated ASW patrol,
both vessels were obviously manned by skilled crews with best equipment, making evasion
a challenge. CISCO went to 675 ft once again to escape.

While enemy active sonar ceased, it appeared they maintained some type of hydrophone contact
as stayed quite close to CISCO dropping many charges. Most detonated well above, but
boat was shaken and some minor damage occurred from shockwaves at such depth.

Evasion consisted of course, speed, and depth changes, as well as submergence
to 675 ft.

Depth Charge tally for this attack was 171.

Airborne ASW
-------------------

Enemy aircraft in the Palau area were effective ASW patrols, forcing
multiple dives and bombing CISCO multiple times.

One low flying BETTY at dawn on 1 April, managed to fly in to just 6000 yards before detection,
dropping 3 depth charges/bombs along side CISCO as she submerged, causing heavy damage
and requiring return to port to terminate patrol.

Multiple enemy aircraft were equipped with radar and APR-1 typically detected
radar emissions before SD contact was made.

Some enemy aircraft appeared to turn radar on and off at intervals, likely
aware we may have radar detection equipment.

MINES
-------

1944/04/06 0227
10-46S 152-5E
Spotted floating mine in Jomard Pass,
detonated with 20mm gunfire.

RADAR
-------

SJ

SJ radar performance was again overall excellent. Typical detection
range on contacts was 28000-29000 yards. PPI scope again proved a real asset.

A curious exception to the performance was failure to detect a surfaced enemy submarine
(Torpedo Attack No.2). Check of equipment showed performing well. Low profile of enemy
boat appeared enough to evade SJ detection.

SD

SD performance was normal, with typical detection range around 13000 yards.

As always, low flying aircraft were not always detected. This lead
to a bombing at dawn on1 April that caused heavy damage to CISCO and
termination of patrol.

RADAR COUNTERMEASURES
--------------------------------------

APR-1 typically detected enemy radar emissions around
10-12 nautical miles, depending on conditions.

SOUND GEAR AND SOUND CONDITIONS
-------------------------------------------------

Performance of JP listening gear was overall excellent with contacts
detected at 15,000 plus yards, and precise tracking possible in most conditions
at 10000 yards or less.

Performance declined for duration of patrol after damaged by aircraft attack.

THERMAL LAYERS
--------------------------

One thermal layer was detected during Depth Charge Attack No.1 at 201 ft.

RADIO
--------

Radio performance was normal and satisfactory.

TORPEDO PERFORMANCE
---------------------------------

Performance of the new MK 23 torpedo was excellent with no known malfunctions.
These torpedoes sunk a tanker, submarine, and severely damaged at cargo vessel.

Using Contact only detonators without Magnetic Influence has proven
to drastically increase torpedo performance on last two patrols.

LIFEGUARD OPERATIONS

FACTORS IN ENDURANCE
--------------------

Torpedoes 14

Major factor in termination of patrol:

Battle damage-Heavy.

REMARKS
------------

A successful but challenging patrol cut short by unexpected heavy damage
from air attack. Ten downed aviators and crew rescued in lifeguard operations
are considered the highlight of this patrol, even with the sinking of
a tanker and enemy submarine, in addition to severely damaging a merchant
vessel.

CISCO's Balao Class design proved quite tough, standing up to operations
at extreme depths while being depth charged severely. Survival of the air attack
given the close proximity of the air dropped depth charges/bombs is a testament to stout construction.

Performance of SD radar versus low flying aircraft is ongoing issue of concern, which led to the heavy damage suffered on this patrol. As such, it is hoped the SD is improved in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

1546 Torpedo impact! Torpedo heard hitting unknown vessel as CISCO passed
125 ft. Large explosions heard.

1547 DD above pinging. Splashes

1548 As CISCO passed 400 feet, DC explosions.

1549 Another DD above, more DC explosions,
close, boat shaken.

1552 Massive explosions audible from last bearing of CV TAIHO.

1554 Pinging, DD had solid contact on CISCO at 500 ft.

1555 Large pattern of depth charges, boat severely shaken. Damage reported.
Leaks in forward torpedo room.

1558 More explosions from last bearing of CV.

1601 CISCO at 525 ft. Two DD's made runs.

1602- Large patterns of depth charges, CISCO shaken, more
1603 damage reported. Leaks previously contained in forward torpedo
were now leaking again, causing flooding.

1605 Multiple large explosions from CV bearing followed
by "death noises". CV TAIHO believed sunk.

1610 Flooding controlled, water in compartment, bow slightly heavy, compensated with speed.

1611 A period of near constant pinging from multiple
DD's began. They appeared to be circling CISCO.

1617 Large DC pattern, boat shakes, damage reported. CISCO at 545 ft.
We were surprised by ability of enemy DD's to maintain contact in such
terrible sound conditions.

1618 More depth charges, close. Boat shaken, minor damage.

1620 More DC explosions, not close.

1621 Pinging stopped, lost contact with nearby DD's, believe were listening.

1623 Large explosions from area of CA hit during attack.

1630 Two DD's roared to life one ahead, one aft raced above CISCO
dropping large patterns of depth charges above and along the port side.

1631 Many DC explosions, several close, heavy damage reported.

1632 Flooding in control room, Engine rooms.

1633 Conning tower heavily damaged by DC exploding very close.
Executive Officer LCDR J.B. Butler severely injured (health fell to 15 percent)
At the helm, Chief Signalman G.C. Carter seriously injured (health went to 30 percent)

1634 Conning tower abandoned and sealed off due to damage and flooding.

1634 CISCO sinking, secured silent running, ordered speed to comepsante and full rise on planes
Damage Control Party assigned.

1635 More explosions. DC's, more damage reported in aft torpedo room.

1641 Managed to rise to 450 feet while battling flooding and other damage.

1644 More DC's, close.

1645 Pinging stopped, enemy dropping DC's around
appeared to have lost contact.

1654 Several DD's heard departing area high speed to join the task force
However, soon found out two were left behind to keep CISCO pinned down.

1702 CISCO at 410 feet , fighting to hold depth, battling
flooding. Suddenly DD roared above pinging,
dropping depth charges. One depth charge bounce off of the deck aft of conning
tower and exploded below CISCO, causing severe damage.

Hull damage went to 40 percent.

Every piece of equipment on boat had some level of damage.
Port prop shaft destroyed, aft battery damage at 94 percent.
Conning tower flooded and abandoned. Aft torpedo tubes destroyed.
Hydraulic pumps knocked out. Compressor destroyer. Stern dive planes transmission destroyed.Rudder transmission heavily damaged. No.1 and No.3 diesels disabled, could not repair at sea. With all damage, a battle surface was seriously considered, but some flooding had been contained thanks to valiant efforts of damage control party and some amount of depth control restored, but battery power was draining fast.

1730 After a few more runs, the enemy, for unknown reasons, gave up, two were heard
departing the area at high speed. However, wary one maybe had been left behind to listen.
CISCO continued to hold depth at 360 ft.

1840 Conning tower pumped out.

1930 Battery power nearly exhausted. Close to dark, surfaced and manned guns
in case needed, but no enemy was around. CISCO surfaced into flat calms seas and clear dusk skies.

Most likely reason for the effective enemy attack aside from first rate
destroyers and crews, was after going deep following the attack,
weather topside cleared providing ideal sound conditions for the enemy.

2000 CISCO was in shambles and ineffective. A message was sent to CTF-72
and set course for Manus Island to terminate patrol.

2030 Located large debris field, likely site where carrier TAIHO sunk.

Gunnery Attacks

No.1
16.09.39

Expended 14 rounds 8.8 cm High Explosive Rounds
for 12 hits. 330 ton steam trawler sunk.

No.2
25.09.39

Expended 12 High Explosive Rounds and four illumination rounds
for 12 HE hits. 330 ton steam trawler sunk.

100 2 cm AP rounds from 2 cm machine gun expended on target for 50+ hits

------------------------------------------

Enemy Anti-Submarine Countermeasures
--------------------------------------

British appear to have adapted convoy system as two large convoys
were encountered in area. Each convoy was well protected, the first
included the battleship sunk by torpedo and three destroyers.

Enemy "ASDIC" seemed adequate to detect and track the boat
up to around 100-140 meters. After reaching this depth the enemy
appeared to have trouble tracking. Enemy depth charge attacks were
persistent.

Enemy depth charges appeared to produce large and powerful explosions
but in nearly all cases they were set too shallow. This was likely due
to believing our U-Boat could not operate beyond certain depths
along with their ASDIC's trouble in tracking beyond certain depths.

Enemy merchant vessels encountered were not armed. However, these vessels displayed a penchant for attempting to ram our U-Boat as
this occurred, twice in two separate attacks. First, in a gunnery attack
on a 330 ton steam trawler, after several gun hits, the trawler turned as best speed to ram.

On the next occasion, after firing final torpedo from inside convoy,
a large merchant vessel of 5000 tons increased speed and turned towards
our U-Boat to ram. Increase to flank speed and application of rudder got us
out of danger but was challenging given the heavy sea state and close range
of vessel.

Torpedoes
------------

All fourteen torpedoes aboard were expended.

Eight torpedoes prematurely detonated
One torpedo missed target, alerted by premature detonations.

Five torpedoes hit target as aimed.

Remark
--------

Repeated torpedo failures prevented further success and waste of torpedoes.
A valuable 10500 ton enemy tanker was saved only by torpedo malfunctions.
However, crew and boat persevered in sinking a valuable enemy warship.

Default U-48 second patrol screenshots

Had external cam disabled on this one, so not as many screenshots.

Ship in convoy sped up and turned toward my periscope to ram.

A T1 G7a Torpedo missed its intended target in convoy, but went on to hit another, sinking it.

Love how steam trawler's boilers explode, pretty cool effect.

2 Tankers sunk- 8,300 tons, 8,300 tons.
1 Tanker 8,500 tons damaged.

(Sadly, I was relieved of command upon return to port. In spite of success in three patrols, sinking of two tankers from neutral nations caused me to be removed and picked up by the Gestapo (Secret Police as it said) hmmm. This changed from OM, was not aware. Sinking neutral ships sailing with Allied ships is bound to happen, one was sunk by mistake when a torpedo missed target and hit the neutral)

Default U48 night surface attack March 1940

Tracked a convoy all day to attack on surface at night. Ideal conditions. During approach, suddenly a storm blew in, seas grew heavy with winds, and rain, a light fog. Fortunately, at close range I could still see the ships, so took advantage and moved in for attack. Sunk one merchant. Attempted to set up on another but heavy seas made maneuvering into position difficult. Soon a destroyer was on scene, forcing us to dive. Rather dramatic attack.
