Default Calling all knowledge about sub history!

Ok guys sry to bother you...... I am looking something unbelievable.
A sub hit by big caliber and manage to survive and went back home.
Did something similar to this case had ever existed?

There was a US sub in WW2 that took a shell that put a hole in it topside, I think thru the front, it couldn't dive anyway and was a long way from base. The capt notified Christie who sent another sub to get the crew off. They planned to scuttle the boat as it had to go through Japanese held waters and it was decided that no way would it make it. But when the other boat showed up the captain changed his mind and elected to try and make it to Fremantle, with the other boat with it. Against all odds and a lot of luck they in fact made it. Christie later said he was glad the captain didn't follow his orders to scuttle.

Don't ask me the name of the boat, I forgot.

I don't recall the date, or whether the shell was from an escort or from a deck gun of a tanker, etc. I think the hole was severe enough to be able to look down into the forward torpedo room when you were standing on deck. It was early in the war I am fairly sure.

Yeah, that was the one I was thinking about. Took a hit at the foward hatch. It was 2000 miles from Exmouth Gulf. Angler was the sub sent to help and went to Exmouth with Bergall.

For some reason I thought it was earlier on in the war, date was Dec. 13, 1944, arrived at Exmouth with Angler on Dec. 20th.

One lucky boat and crew.
