Mystery Subsim #48

Here is the initial shot of Mystery Subsim #48

Be the first to guess correctly the name of this subsim or naval game and have your name added to the prize pool.

If you guess, and you are wrong, then you have used one of your three wrong guesses alloted to each player. Each player gets only three wrong guesses in the whole contest before your participation ends, so guess wisely (if you are really sure). If you don't know, don't waste a guess! You can only guess incorrectly three times in the contest.

You cannot EDIT your post in this contest. An edited or deleted post counts as a guess.

Remember the rules!!

If no one tries to guess this shot, or no one guesses correctly, there will be an expanded shot to follow.

Good hunting!
Neal

PS: Dowly, no guessing now, don't screw up the contest

It is Carriers at War

About the game:

Quote:
The game covers every large carrier action in the Pacific theatre from Pearl Harbor onwards. There are seven scenarios in all, each with at least one ahistorical variant that allows players to spice things up with promising "what if" scenarios. While the number of these alternate history levels may be lacking, any concerns over the game's replayability are unwarrantedthe developer has gone to great lengths to ensure that each scenario plays out differently each time. Enemy taskforces never show up along the same routes twice and variances in computer behavior go a long way towards adding long-term value to the game.
During the carrier battles themselves the player's main goal is usually to seek out and destroy the opposing carriers. This is where the game really shines. SSG has managed to largely capture the tense atmosphere surrounding carrier operations. As each day begins planes are sent out to search for signs of the enemy, a crucial first step to defeat the opposition.

Nice to see so many misses trailing in your wake, Subnuts. You would think they would shy away after seeing your post, I guess they don't trust you... :hmm:

Well, who's up for Mystery Subsim #49? I ain't saying when it will be posted, but I will give you a hint: soon!

Neal

OK, this one just piqued my interest.

Anyone out there play this one? Or its hardcore cousin, War in the Pacific?

I'm curious about carriers at war, but haven't played it. I have, however, some experience with War in the Pacific. It has an expansion due shortly (a couple months??) which will overhaul the map, the AI, and some minor tweaking. It is, first and foremost, a logistics simulator. Turns are one day, and the scale is air squadrons, individual ships, and infantry battalions, regiments, and divisions. Both sides issue orders and the next day is then resolved. You'll spend most of your time moving supplies, oil, air squadrons and troops. The big battles are pretty sparse, but enjoyable, and attrition happens daily. If you play the whole war (including Pearl Harbor, which resolves differently every time) the amount of stuff you need to take care of can be overwhelming, but when you do, and you come out victorious, there is a great deal of pride. If you have more specific questions, let me know.

Thanks! I've noticed Matrix has an in-house forum where people seek opponents. Are there other players' communities you know of?

The Matrix forums is the only place I've looked, and opponent requests are usually filled pretty quickly (though I'll admit to not doing many PBEM games). I haven't played much lately, and I'm waiting for the expansion to see the list of things that were addressed.

I've been reading some AAR's.

I've been hearing about air combat being wonked in the stock game, and mods to fix it breaking things and maybe making it worse. Has anyone got this sorted out?

Also, I'm a bit concerned about the level control. From what I'm reading, it seems you can't order air wings to attack a task force or a base, but you can only set them to attack one type of target or the other and the AI handles it from there. I can understand that they might not want you to have tactical control during an air strike itself (ie choosing which planes attack which ships), but not having control on the operational level to plan an execute an air strike is probably a deal breaker for me.

There are a couple of mods that help with the air combat problems, but I've decided to wait for the expansion rather than add a mod. Hopefully the devs will come up with a balanced solution instead of a guess from a third party.

As for the air attack targeting, the naval strikes are completely out of your control, other than to put air units on naval strike priority. Base attacks can be targeted specifically, and you can choose between port attack, airfield attack, and ground forces attack. In addition you can choose the attack altitude for most air strikes, which influences losses from AAA and strike accuracy.

Well that's just wonderful. So I could have a C-DD group and an invasion fleet approaching a base I need to hold, and I can't order my air forces to target the invasion fleet so I'll have to end up sitting back and watching them go after the wrong target and then get overrun when the enemy lands in full strength. How can they go into so much detail that it's called "hardcore" but they don't even allow you to order a strike?
