Support AoD Dos: v1. 2 ?

Hello fellow subsimers!

I have dos AoD with the expansion disk already unchunked and even though the v1. 2 patch is very user-friendly, when I run the AODPATCH. BAT and put the name of the directory where my AoD is, it puts me back to the page you get when you type AOPATCH for the first time and tells me that it could not find an installed version of AoD...

I have tried multiple times and it is still not working, though, I must say that I somehow have no OLM folder and that might be the cause of the problem?

Has anyone encounter this problem before and has solutions?

Please let me know and...

Happy Hunting!

Found a solution!

Hadn’t properly looked in older threads, this is what I found

AddON: -one Big "resource.000" file and a data-file unchunk.exe
- copy both into an empty folder in the directory that u mount c with Dosbox
- in DosBox go in that folder and write: "unchunk resource.000 [folder]"
[folder] e.g. c:\oldgames\Test
- copy the unziped/unchunked ;-) content to your AOD folder and overwrite

Patch: the same, only 2 ressource files (000/001)

maybe that helps somebody else too! (oh it did )

p.s. english version recommended, otherwise mixed

This is what I got when typing the codes at the Dos prompt

https://ibb.co/mXCrM66

And this is an extract of the Readme file in the V1.2 upgrade, I have made important text (that I didn't know about) stand out:

__________________________________________________ ___________

If you install the Patch Disk in a different language from your original
game (AoD or AoD CD), you will get some text in each language when you
run the simulation. If you wish to change languages, you must re-install
the game and the Patch Disk to select the desired language.

If you make a mistake and install the Patch Disk with the wrong language,
you won't need to reinstall the game. Simply reinstall the Patch Disk
with the proper language selected.

This patch includes fixes for both the original Aces of the Deep as well
as the Expansion Disk. If you purchase the Expansion Disk at a later
time, it will be necessary to re-install the patch after installing the
Expansion Disk.

II. Saved Games

Career games saved under AoD or AoD CD might not load properly into your
simulation once you have installed the Patch Disk, unless you saved the
game while in port. To preserve a career saved while at sea you must
first bring your skipper into port and save the game before you install
the Patch disk.

III. Torpedo Tracks

At high levels of difficulty AoD will no longer display the tracks of
torpedoes that have been fired. This makes playing AoD at elite levels
somewhat more difficult than before. You will need to use your stopwatch
to keep track of the progress of your torpedoes if you are using the
simulation at a realistic setting.

The following were included in the AoD Expansion Disk:

1) When saving a game, the number of deck gun rounds remaining will
be correctly saved.

2) A gauge has been added showing amount of compressed air and water
in the boat; this should make it more obvious to the player when the
cause is lost.

3) If the player is on the surface and no hostile units are in view,
player can time compress up to 512x, and if no hostile units are PRESENT
IN AREA upto over 4000x.

4) Torpedoes were vanishing from the torpedo loading screen; this was
fixed.

5) The music for "Ride of the Valkyres" and "It's a long way to
Tipperary" have been added.

6) Stop watch is fixed

The following have been fixed since the release of the Expansion disk:

7) Stern tubes were loading, even when 100% damaged.

8) Crash on reporting contact bug fixed.

Also, thanks for the tips regarding the AoD CD install, but for some reason I don't have an INTRO.BAT file and in my RESOURCE.CFG, I don't have a part talking about FlicPlayer...

I Think it is because I downloaded the game from this website:

Really looking forward to get the CD version with the awsome Online-Manual,thought.

Ah but: in Dosbox you must go in the right directory first! For example type:

cd:\
cd c:\dynamix\[Directory where you unchunk.exe is located]

then launch the special *.bat file I mention in my guide by typing e.g.

special

if the bat is named special.bat.

--------

Forget all the Readme stuff, the instructions won't work, stick only to my guide.

Thanks finally got it to unchunk

Made a mystake because I thought that in your guide all the instructions for the SPECIAL.BAT where for the expansion disk that I didn't look at since I already had it's ressource unchunked and in my AOD folder. Managed to get everything unchunked and overwrote the old files, though my little section of the readme file was just to show what the v1. 2 had to offer.

My guide above assumes that you have the AOD CD-ROM. The folders SOUND, OLM, INTRO are located in it (and you must copy them to the Dosbox game folder).

If you have another source of the game, then my guide may not fully apply, I would need to see a screenshot of your game dir structure to tell you if you have all the files.
The INTRO is not important, the OLM contains the online-manual, also not critical to play the game. But the content of the expansion disk (which you need to manually 'unchunk'), as well as the update 1.2 are critical to have all new game features.

If you did not enter the right unchunk command, then not all files will be extracted. You must have the file Resource.000, unchunk.exe and the special BAT file in the SAME folder, then you must navigate with DOS to that folder (see commands above) , and enter the command (or launch the special bat file) with:

unchunk resource.000 . > nul

Dont' make any typing errors or ommission - especially the spaces - ...or it will not extract everything... (best is to copy-paste the command from my guide and put it in a bat file as I explain.)
All this dance was never meant to be done manually, or try to mount a A:\ diskette in Dosbox with the expansion disk, and launch the BAT file that comes with it, , I have tried that but it didn't work, so you must do it manually.

Ok,
So I am 100% sure that I have all the expansion disk upgrades, because I have a gauge panel (g).

here is just the AOD folder overview:

https://ibb.co/Xs23fP4

I have tryed re-unchunking my copy of the expansion disk and this is what I got:

https://ibb.co/pZ4G06R

Not sure How I got it to unchunk but I am pleased to say that I (normally) should have the fully upgraded version of DOS AOD (but no OLM, though).

Once more thanks for all your useful help

Happy Hunting!

Seems to be ok by judging your 1st shot.

Your SIM folder should contain 57 files + SAVE folder with 44 files.

You can further check that you have all features of the game by:

- In historical missions, there should be missions with type XXI u-boat, plus missions that take place in the Mediterranean Sea.

- In-game go to your Watch Officer menu and fire-up the 2nd last order, this should show you Air Pressure Level + Flooding Level (water level).

- In the single missions, the type XXI u-boat is selectable and playable.

- Single missions and campaign (patrol) missions can now be saved in open sea when going in the CTRL-O menu.

If you have all this, then all is OK I would say

I wish you a good hunting and a lot of fun with AOD

P.S: I have played recently, but found no traffic in the Med Sea during a campaign, I may be there at the wrong time, but possibly only the single missions will feature traffic in the Med Sea, a little drawback but we have to live with it...

I have every feature you pointed out in your post except that I don't have the right file numbers:
50 for the SIM folder and 31 files for the save folder

Havn't went through that death trap of Gibraltar yet, in my type IX b at the outposts of Gibraltar waiting for juicy targets to come by!

BTW did you know that you could move a stern external torpedo to the forward torpedo room? Just discovered this feature. Also, do you have some tips on successfully hitting a destroyer with a torpedo? Because I always miss, even when using a 3 shot salvo with different offsets...

Happy Hunting and good luck getting out of the Med Alive! (exept if you changed your homeport inside the Med...)
