Default Kilo Snorting Detection Range and FFG torpedo evasion?

G'day guys,

Just wanted to ask two quick questions. I could do some of my own testing, but thought I'd ask in case someone knows.

1. Do you know at roughly what range a snorting Kilo will be detected by a Western submarine and/or warship?
1a. Has anyone had success by snorting 'behind' an island, so that you can't be heard?

2. Also, does anyone have any 'tactics' for evading torps in the Perry? I know it's 'low percentage' (and if it's a wake homer, you're basically done)

As I understand it, when you hear TIW:
1. Stream the Nixie
2. All ahead Flank
3. But do you 'snake' away from it with turns (like subs) or is that a waste of time, because the FFG doesn't have decoys?

Thanks guys - basic questions - just wanted to ask!
I'm (finally) getting into the FFG, and am enjoying it!

Hello, Stewy!

I've never actually tested out the Kilo snorkling thing. It would definitely be interesting to check out but I think finding a Kilo snorkling would be pretty rare given the nature of Dangerous Waters. I imagine you'd see it from quite far and it will obviously depend on the mod. Hiding behind land definitely works to block sound, but those are pretty rare situations.

For evading torpedoes, the sidestep still applies like with submarines (run away from the torpedo at a course approximately +/-135* from the torpedo's bearing). The goal of that maneuver is to "mathematically" beat the torpedo and get outside its detection cone to avoid getting into a situation where you gotta use CMs because that gets dicey quickly, of course.

If you're up close, definitely maneuver around. I've watched a torpedo get spoofed by my nixie with truth on, and you'd want to be turning so when it gets past the nixie it's not just looking at your ship again but open ocean.

For FFG, I play it as a home base for using helos to find subs, i.e., keep your frigate as far as possible from enemy subs lol use the helos to go out and find them. FFG is much louder than a sub so you should crawl around and make like a hole in the water.

Thanks very much for that info, Chazly. Yes, I'd like to try making a 'longer' Kilo mission, which would require some 'tactical' snorting.

Thanks for the info about the FFG too! Very helpful!

You're welcome! That could be fun, I've never done any kind of extended series with a Kilo or diesel boat.
