Default Netherlands Navy and 3d scanning

There are interesting news, that Royal Netherlands Navy is going to 3d scan all their ships. They say it helps them to get very accurate 3d models faster than model them manually.
I just thought, why not use such technic to make in game submarines looks exact like real ones.
I'm not pretty sure how much time it takes, to turn 3d scan to game ready model, but if this guys use it, maybe it makes sense...
