War in the boats "the book"

Hello Guys,
I just finished reading one of the most interesting sub books called "War in the boats" most of you hard core have likely read it already, but I just had to post this, in this book Capt. Ruhe, the author, captures the essence of the submarine officer. The frustrations, hardships, fear, and ultimate glory of the silent service are powerfully captured. The patrol accounts are spine-tingling and not all captains are spit and polish, like in some other sub books i have read, he makes you feel as if you were there. Capt. Ruhe details all his daily concerns, both as a junior officer, and as the Executive officer. You get a good feel for his leadership style, and those of the other wardroom officers. The book is easy to read and he adds his own home brand of humor and ancedotes. I Recommend it to all. Indy

No book collection on sub warfare would be complete without "Thunder Below".

From the U-boat side, just an amazing story of what those poor U-boat crews went through after 43, read "Iron Coffins."

They're works of fiction, but they are very realistic and read like non-fiction. And they better-they were written by someone who was there-Edward L. Beach.

They're a trilogy:

Run Silent, Run Deep
Dust on the Sea
Cold is the Sea (takes place during the cold war but finishes out the trilogy)

Am reading War in the Boats now. About 3/4 the way through. Excellent read. Loved the early war stuff with the S boats.

Is there any way we can move it to the books forum?

I just finished Sliderules and Submarines but I can't really recommend it. A little too much revisionist history about submarines for my taste.

Has anyone read "Final Harbor"? That falls squarely in the fiction but reads good catagory.

Three must reads for US subs in the PTO

1.Thunder Below by Gene Fluckey CO of the Barb
2.Wahoo by Richard O'Kane XO on this sub but tells about Mush
3.Clear the Bridge by Richard O'Kane CO for the Tang

I have read Thunder Below 3 or 4 times cover to cover my copy has foot notes and sections underlined by me all though out it.

Most of those mentioned here were written fairly recently. It is interesting to go back and read those published earlier. My recommendation if you can find it is War Fish by George Girder copyright 1958; Library of Congress number 58-7863

Sea Assault - the story of the sinking of the aircraft carrier Shinano by the USS Archerfish.

The Fleet The Gods Forgot by W.G. Winslow
Submarine Diary by Corwin Mendenhall

The first book covers the naval retreat right after Pearl Harbor and describes some very dark days of WWII.

The second is a personal journal kept by a young submarine officer aboard a U.S. fleet boat and his WWII Career.
