Default Ships sinking before i can attack?

So i detected a lone ship just off Manila and started to get into an attack position. Sea was kinda rough but not oberly bad. Suddenly i go to the nav map an see that the ship sunk icon has appeared on the map. Go to free camera and lo and behold the ship is in flames and sinking. No friendly aircraft around, i fired no torpedos at the ship. It just sunk.

This isn't tje first this has happened. What gives?

Was it close to land or in shallow water?
There isn't a minefield there is there, I nearly struck one not long ago?

I've seen destroyed ships on the map too, I know I haven't sank them and no other ships or aircraft around.

It was close to land, just outside Manila, its july 1942, dont think there ia a minefield, i have seen it happen in open water too, both times in bad weather. First time the sea was very rough. This time it was choppy but not too bad

I rarely saw that with TMO RSRD and tho rare, choppy seas can sometimes sink small ships, tho only time I saw that is when I made them higher waves

It is a cumulative effect also, so damage in Tokyo, is still there in Balipapan when they hit a bigger storm, and then the breakers off Java take them out...
