Daily London broadcasts by the newly formed British Broadcasting Company began from Marconi House on The Strand, on 14 November 1922, using the call sign 2LO, with transmissions from Birmingham and Manchester.


Ship Losses:

Agga (Norway) The cargo ship ran aground 5 nautical miles (9.3 km) south of Valencia, Spain. She was refloated on 19 December.
Hattie Hickman (United Kingdom) The schooner was wrecked at Duck Island, Newfoundland.
Monte Grappa (Italy) The cargo ship foundered in the Atlantic Ocean (43°08′N 30°57′W). Pittsburgh ( United Kingdom) rescued her 45 crew.
Norland (United States) The cargo ship foundered in Lake Michigan off Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Her crew were rescued.

Ecuadorean military and police officers gun down at least 300 people after large crowds gather to strike for higher pay.


Voting today in the British general election results in a healthy majority for the Conservative Party led by Andrew Bonar Law. The Labour and Liberal parties, though well back, make gains. (A policeman holds back the crowds in London during the General Election.)


Ship Losses:

Bonnie Jean (United States) While no one was aboard, the 11-gross register ton, 36-foot (11.0 m) motor passenger vessel sank in "Scow Bay" in Southeast Alaska. The wreck report does not specify whether she sank in Scow Bay (56°46′20″N 132°57′50″W) on the coast of Mitkof Island in the Alexander Archipelago near Petersburg, Territory of Alaska, or in Scow Bay (56°42′45″N 135°16′30″W) on Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago southeast of Goddard, Territory of Alaska.

Rome: The new Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini tells the Italian Chamber of Deputies to obey him or be dissolved. After the explanation of his government program, he receives dictatorial powers from the majority of the Italian Parliament.

Cataluña (Spain) The cargo ship ran aground on Sálvora, Galicia and was a total loss. Her crew were rescued.
Lister (United States) During a voyage in the Aleutian Islands from Umnak Island to Unalaska, the 21-gross register ton motor vessel was wrecked on the coast of Unalaska Island 10 nautical miles (19 km; 12 mi) south of Makushin Point (53°45′30″N 167°01′20″W) because of a navigational error due to a faulty compass. Her crew of four survived.

The NSDAP, also known as the Nazi Party, a far-right German nationalist party based in Munich, reaches 10,000 members, becoming a legitimate force in German politics. Many new members have joined as a result of Benito Mussolini’s success in Italy.


Abdulmejid II, formerly the Crown Prince of the Ottoman Empire, was elected by the Grand National Assembly of Turkey at Ankara as the new Caliph after the sultanate was abolished.


Ship Losses:

San José (Spain) The schooner was abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean (37°46′N 12°54′W) having sprung a leak five days before. Her crew were rescued by Stella ( Italy).
Santi (Spain) The cargo ship ran aground on Plana Island, off Cape Santa Pola, Valencia. She broke in two on 21 November and was a total loss.

Switzerland: Opening in Lausanne of the conference to settle the Turkish dispute with Greece and the Allies. (Arrival of the Turkish delegates).

Wilhelm Cuno, an independent politician who was not a member of any political party, was appointed as the new Chancellor of Germany by President Friedrich Ebert without a vote in the Reichstag, He was the first chancellor in the Weimar Republic.

Sara (Italy) The coaster was rammed by Singleton Abbey ( United Kingdom) at Valletta, Malta and sank. Her crew were rescued.
Sequana 7 (France) The cargo ship foundered in the English Channel off Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, Somme. Her crew were rescued by Honfleur ( France).

Al (United States) The 6-gross register ton motorboat suffered a gasoline explosion and was destroyed by the resulting fire off North Dundas Island in British Columbia, Canada, south of Dixon Entrance. The launch Ralph (flag unknown) rescued her crew of two.
Rabo (Spain) The cargo ship collided with the trawler Kermelo ( France) in the Bay of Biscay north of Cape Prior and sank. Her crew were rescued by Kermelo.

26th November 1922

Creator of Peanuts Charles M. Schulz was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Carl and Dena Schulz. Two days later he would be nicknamed "Sparky" by his uncle. This was taken from the comic strip character Spark Plug.


The Howard Carter expedition in Luxor entered the tomb of Tutankhamun. Carter, Lord Carnarvon, and Carnarvon's 21-year-old daughter Evelyn Herbert became the first persons in more than 3,000 years to set foot inside the tomb.


The intact necropolis seal and cord fastening on the third (of four) great gilded shrines surrounding Tutankhamun's sarcophagus in the Burial chamber. The unbroken seal confirmed that the King's body remained undisturbed.


Ship Losses:

Havbryn (Norway) The cargo ship foundered off Kristiansand, Norway. Her crew were rescued by Idefjord ( Norway).
Outreau (France) The cargo ship departed from Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland for Boulogne, Pas de Calais. She subsequently foundered in the North Sea. A lifebuoy was discovered off the Hook of Holland, Netherlands on 5 December.

Five members of the Greek government, which was deposed in September, and General Georgios Hatzianestis are executed after being sentenced before a military tribunal in Goudi near Athens.

Archaeologist Howard Carter opened the sarcophagus containing the body of Tutankhamun, the Pharaoh of Egypt who died around 1323 BC.
