5th September 1921

Crown Prince Hirohito (left) returns to Japan after his tour of Europe. The tour was the first foreign trip of a Japanese Crown Prince.


Ship Losses:

Clarrie (United Kingdom) The cargo ship was wrecked at the entrance to St. Sampson's, on the Roustel Rock, Guernsey, Channel Islands inward from Newhaven, Sussex in ballast and sank. All seven crew were rescued.
Santa Teresa (Italy) The cargo ship struck a mine in the Black Sea 40 nautical miles (74 km) from the entrance to the Bosphorus and sank. The crew were rescued.

Commemorations are held to mark the anniversary of the First Battle of the Marne at Meaux Cathedral, France.


Ship Losses:

Almanzora (United Kingdom) The ocean liner ran aground at Oporto, Portugal. Her 1,200 passengers were taken off on 8 September. She was refloated on 13 September.
Thyra (Greece) The cargo ship sank off Lemnos.

Ship Losses:

Beacon Grange (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground at Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, Argentina and was abandoned. She was declared a total loss on 12 September.
Corrib (United Kingdom) The cargo ship ran aground on the west coast of Tory Island, County Donegal. Her crew were rescued. She was abandoned as a total loss on 14 October.

Actor Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle is arrested and charged with the murder of actress Virginia Rappe.

Prince Louis of Battenberg, the former First Sea Lord of the British Royal Navy at the start of the Great War, has passed away. He was forced into retirement early in the War due to his background as a German prince.

Bodies of American soldiers killed in Europe return to their hometown of Barnesville, Minnesota. A number of American dead in Europe continue to be returned home years after the Great War.


Hitler and other Nazi members engage in a fight with Bavarian secessionists led by Otto Ballerstedt (pictured) at Munich. Hitler is sentenced to jail for 100 days for assaulting Ballerstedt (who is killed by the SS in 1934, likely on Hitler’s orders)

Baron von Ungern-Sternberg, Russian anticommunist warlord who intervened in Mongolia to expel the Chinese from the country and revive the Mongol Empire, is executed by firing squad after he was captured by the Red Army.


Ship Losses:

Louis Gustave (France) The three-masted schooner caught fire in the English Channel and was abandoned 8 nautical miles (15 km) north west of Guernsey, Channel Isles.

Farlings (United Kingdom) The schooner was driven ashore and wrecked on the north east coast of Barbados.
Socrates (United Kingdom) The schooner was wrecked at Barbados.
Namara (United Kingdom) The schooner was dismasted and abandoned in the Atlantic Ocean (approximately 23°N 71°W).
Pepita Maru (Spain) The cargo ship ran aground at Utö, Finland. Her crew were rescued.
Sophie (France) The coaster struck a mine and sank in the Black Sea 14 nautical miles (26 km) off Constanţa, Romania. Her crew were rescued.

Bodies of American crewmen of the R38/ZR-2 airship disaster arrive back in the United States. The airship, the largest in the world, exploded and crashed last month while testing in England.


Ship Losses:

São Thomé (Portugal) The cargo ship was wrecked at Mpando, French Equatorial Africa.

George Mountbatten and Louis Mountbatten attend the funeral of their father Louis Alexander Mountbatten (Prince Louis of Battenberg), former First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy.


Ship Losses:

Malden (United States) After colliding with the steamer Jonancy ( United States) off Montauk Point, Long Island, New York, in dense fog on 18 September during a voyage from Norfolk, Virginia, to Boston, Massachusetts, the 5,054-gross register ton cargo ship was beached on Long Island 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Montauk Point and 1 nautical mile (1.9 km; 1.2 mi) off shore. Her wreck settled in 40 feet (12 m) of water, and she was declared a total loss. Her crew of 42 survived and was rescued by Jonancy and the cutter USCGC Achushnet (Ensign of the United States Coast Guard (1915–1953)
